Melissa McCarthy mocks Ghostbusters critics

MCCARTHY has poked fun at the male online trolls who have criticised the female-led cast of the new Ghostbusters film.

MELISSA McCarthy has mocked critics of the Ghostbusters reboot who’ve taken umbrage at the casting of four women in the lead roles.

McCarthy stars alongside Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon in the all-female remake of the 1984 flick, directed by Paul Feig.

The original film starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and the late Harold Ramis as three eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City.

During an interview promoting the new film on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, McCarthy was quick to shutdown online trolls, which she claims were mostly men, who criticised the casting.

“Terrific fellas!” she said with sarcasm after host Jimmy brought up the online outrage.

“What they don’t say when they’re typing is that one minute after they type their mum is like, ‘Get upstairs and take out the garbage! You’re 45 years old!’” she joked.

Uproar surrounding the re-imagined Ghostbusters reached a climax in May, after it was reported the film’s trailer was the most disliked in the history of YouTube.

In the wake of the comments, moviemaker Feig released a statement calling out those who write “misogyny and hate and threats” online.

Despite the initial negative response the women have had plenty of support, particularly from the original cast members who’ve all given their stamps of approval on the new movie.

“We’re really, really happy,” Aykroyd, 63, said about his reaction after watching the movie.

“These women performers are great and all the guys in the movie are just fine too.” Murray, 65, also gushed about the new movie and said he only agreed to make a cameo in the new movie because he knew the stars would all give funny performances.

“There is no quit in these girls. This is a tough movie to pull off because it’s a big concept, there’s a lot on the plate, there’s a lot of expectation,” he said, adding that the ladies did meet his expectations when he first saw the film.

“(We) were screaming, cheering like we were at a sporting event.” Ghostbusters will reach Australian cinemas on July 14.
