The most iconic movie kisses of all time

Julia Stiles has opened up about working with late Aussie star Heath Ledger.

The Hustlers actor, who starred in the 1999 romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You with the late Oscar winner, reflected on her favourite day of shooting the movie: when Ledger’s character serenaded a soccer-practising Stiles in the school’s stadium.

“My favourite memory of that day — the whole day, he was just phenomenal,” she told host Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live.

“I mean, like, running up and down those stadium steps and nobody knew that he had this amazing voice. He just went full out and I got to watch it,” she added.

When asked if it was her idea to have Ledger really sing the Frankie Valli and the Four Season’s song Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You in that scene, Stiles said it wasn’t.

“It was definitely not my idea. I wish. Is it a rumour? I didn’t even know that. Cool. I’ll take credit for it,” she joked.

Ledger died on January 22, 2008, aged 28 in his New York City apartment from an accidental overdose of prescription pills, leaving behind daughter, Matilda, whom he shared with ex-girlfriend Michelle Williams.

Stiles also spoke about Ledger during an interview with news.com.au in 2017, explaining that they’d “hung out all the time” during filming.

“He was always a delight,” she recalled. “He had a didgeridoo he’d bring with him and he’d play every day … I’d never seen one before, it was such a novelty.”

Stiles also admitted there had been some behind-the-scenes hook-ups between the castmates.

“Of course there was – you get a bunch of young people together, you’re having a lot of fun … We were at a time in our lives when we were still open and uncensored, and un-self-conscious – it was fun.”

It helped that most of them weren’t yet famous, meaning they could keep their social lives low-key during filming.

“The only person who was really kind of a recognisable star was Joseph Gordon-Levitt, from his TV show 3rd Rock From The Sun.

“For the rest of us, it wasn’t until the movie came out that that momentum kind of built.”
