Home Alone fan theory: Elvis makes a cameo appearance
THERE’S a group of people who seriously believe Elvis is not only alive but that he loves showbiz so much that he makes a cameo in Home Alone.
NOT only is Elvis alive but he also came out of hiding in 1990 to film a cameo appearance in Home Alone.
Yep, that’s a popular fan theory that’s been doing the rounds for years after an eagle-eyed viewer spotted a suspiciously familiar looking ‘extra’ in the Macaulay Culkin movie.
The man in question appears in an airport scene as Kevin’s mum (played by Catherine O’Hara) tries desperately to book a flight back to Chicago to be reunited with her son who was left home alone.
Standing in the queue behind Kevin’s mum is a tall, bearded man wearing a black turtleneck and a grey jacket who some people think is The King himself.
Let’s look at the evidence shall we?
• Elvis allegedly died in 1977 but if he had in fact faked his own death, he would have been 55 years old when Home Alone was filmed. The extra in the movie looks to be roughly that age.
• The head movement that the extra does in the scene is identical to a head movement that The King did in a 1977 CBS special.
You can check it out below:
• As pointed out by Noiseywhichjust completed a thorough “investigation” into the popular theory, the extra in the scene is wearing a turtleneck.
Fun fact, according to a 1979 interview with Priscilla Presley, Elvis preferred clothing that covered up his neck:
“For years I was self-conscious that my neck was too long because Elvis always told me to wear my shirt collars up,” Priscilla said to McCall’s magazine.
“Now I realise ... You know all those pictures where he had his collar up? He was the one who was self-conscious about his neck.”
• And finally, Home Alone was directed by Chris Columbus. Two years earlier, Columbus wrote and directed a movie called Heartbreak Hotel about a teenager who decided to kidnap ... wait for it ... Elvis Presley. Coincidence? Most likely.
In fact, Columbus actually addresses the fan theory about Elvis in the Home Alone DVD commentary, according to Noisey.
“They are convinced, these people, that this is Elvis Presley,” Columbus said on the DVD, “That he’s faked his death, and because he still loves show business, he’s an extra in Home Alone.”
“Look at this guy,” Columbus continued, “He’s not Elvis Presley!”
So, is Columbus deliberately trying to cover up the fact that it is indeed Elvis in the movie or is the whole theory a complete and utter load of s**t?
We’re leaning towards the latter ...
