Gold Coast doubles for California in new trailer for San Andreas, starring The Rock and Kylie Minogue

THE first preview for The Rock’s new action epic, San Andreas, is here and the star talks about doing more stunts in this latest film than ever before.

HOLLYWOOD has fictionalised humanity’s life-and-death battle against asteroids, alien invasions, fires and tornadoes filled with sharks — now it’s adding earthquakes to the list.

The trailer for $100 million epic San Andreas has just been released, showing star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson racing across the devastated California landscape in a helicopter.

And Johnson says he performed more stunts on this latest flick than in any of his previous films, which include the Fast and Furious franchise, GI Joe: Retaliation and Hercules.

The actor and WWE wrestler gave fans a number of behind-the-scenes sneak peeks, instagramming pictures of him parasailing out of helicopters and down mountains.

“I’m no madman or adrenaline junkie,” he wrote to his millions of followers, “just a guy who likes to get s*** done.”

San Andreas tells the story of a rescue chopper pilot and his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) who travel across California to rescue their daughter (Alexandra Daddario) in the wake of a massive earthquake.

In an interview on set at Warners Bros’ Gold Coast studios, Johnson said it was “by far” the most action he had seen on a film.

“Not only did I want to honour the real rescue men and women (I had met) but also to create something cool for the audience because they are savvy and if there are ways where we don’t have to cut around me repelling out of a helo (helicopter) at 300 feet down a cliff then great, let’s give it a shot,” Johnson said.

“I have got a great stunt team who I trust. I actually did one of them on my birthday which was great. It was like this cool shot out the helo all the way down.

“It was a great birthday present.”

And while the movie is set in California it was Australia who actually provided the backdrop for filming with the big-budget action flick largely shot on the Gold Coast earlier this year.

In a nod to its Gold Coast backdrop, the movie even stars Aussie pop rocket songstress Kylie Minogue in a cameo role.

Hollywood Reporter also claims the star will contribute to the film’s soundtrack in some way.

The plot of the film is pretty simple: when the infamous San Andreas Fault line finally gives way, a magnitude nine quake rumbles much of the state, leaving it in ruins.

But this is not just a west coast problem — the entire United States is at risk, it seems.

“Even though this is happening in California, you’ll feel it on the east coast,” Paul Giamatti’s character ominously tells a media conference.

Sure enough, the iconic Hoover Dam, on the border of Arizona and Nevada, is shown cracking and then collapsing.

San Andreas is due for release in May next year.
