It may have taken five long years, but it appears winter is coming once again for Game of Thrones fans.

The hit series is reportedly in the early stages of being developed into a movie, with Warner Bros. said to be quietly working on at least one feature film based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy book series.

According to Deadline, there have been roundtable discussions about a blockbuster film adaptation of the hit HBO series, but as yet there is no filmmaker, cast or writer attached to the project.

However, the company is super keen to bring Westeros to the big screen..

“From what we hear, there have only been preliminary discussions on the subject of a Game of Thrones movie for now, so there are no creative attachments to speak of,” Deadline reports.

“It’s also unclear what creative direction a film would take in comparison to the HBO series.”

Die-hard fans are thrilled about the news, expressing their excitement on X:

“Exciting news about the Game of Thrones movie! Looking forward to seeing how the story continues on the big screen. It promises to be a thrilling experience.”

“Nooo wayyyy. I can’t wait to see the Game of Thrones movie.”

“I’m kind of surprised we haven’t already had a Game of Thrones movie.”

“The potential for new stories in that universe is exciting, and it’ll be interesting to see who they eventually bring on as writer and director.”

The series was a global smash-hit during its 8-season run from 2011 to 2019. It moves between the continents of Westeros and Essos through a web of political conflicts among the noble families vying to claim the throne.

Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, GoT won 59 Emmys and drew in millions of viewers each week – a record 19.3 million viewers tuned in to the series finale alone.

There was first talk of a movie in 2014, when Martin suggested the finale episode should run movie-length and on the big screen.

“It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10?” Martin said at the time ahead of the Season 4 premiere.

“The books get bigger and bigger. It might need a feature [film] to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

The reports of a movie come amid the success of its spin-off House of the Dragon, a prequel to the original series set 300 years prior, starring Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy.

Created by Martin and Ryan Conda, the series – now streaming on BINGE – returned for a highly anticipated Season 2 this year, but faced some criticism from fans for building up to a major battle that never took place.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the ratings for House of the Dragon were the biggest for any HBO show since Game of Thrones. But Season 2 had less viewership than Season 1.
