The official trailer for the third instalment of the horror film franchise 28 Days Later has been released – and one detail in the teaser cannot be unseen.
The official trailer for the third instalment of the horror film franchise 28 Days Later has been released – and one detail in the teaser cannot be unseen.
The film 28 Years Later comes almost two decades after the second instalment, 28 Weeks Later, and 22 years after the original film, which starred Cillian Murphy.
Now fans are convinced they “spotted” the original star in the disturbing trailer for the apocalyptic thriller in a very unexpected role, giving fuel to the rumours he will return in the highly anticipated third film.
The Irish actor played the lead character, a bicycle courier named Jim, in the original film, which went on to become a cult hit.
Although his return has not been confirmed, a split-second shot in the trailer shows an emaciated zombie that bears a resemblance to the Oscar winner.
The similarities are not lost on fans, who think the zombie suspiciously looks like Murphy, whose character survived the events of the film but did not return for the 2007.
Here are the thought floating around on X:
“Is Cillian Murphy’s Jim a zombie chillin’ in a field in 28 Years Later? It is possible, especially when you look at this comic story.”
“Either Cillian Murphy is having fun with a double role or Jim does not have a happy ending in his fate.”
“If that really Cillian Murphy as Jim you know fans are going to be mad because they’ve been waiting years for him to come back and Cillian Murphy said he would love to come back.”
But other fans of the hit franchise are not as convinced:
“You’re telling me Cillian Murphy who just won an Oscar is pretending to be a zombie in a film instead of just playing his character from the original, I don’t think so.”
“For the love of God, the zombie in the trailer is not Jim!”
Although Murphy has voiced his desire to reprise his role in the film, he is absent from promotional posters. However, he is credited as an executive producer on the Sony Pictures website.
