Broadway classic Annie gets a fresh big-screen makeover
CLASSIC musical Annie returns to the big screens later this year with a fresh, modern look — here’s a sneak peek at what to expect.
CLASSIC musical Annie gets a big-screen remake later this year, with the trailer for the upcoming film released today.
This time around, little orphan Annie’s trademark mop of red curls are gone, as the role is played by 10-year-old actor Quvenzhané Wallis, known for her incredible star turn in the 2012 art house hit Beasts of the Southern Wild.
Cameron Diaz plays Miss Hannigan, the role made famous by Carol Burnett in the original 1982 film adaptation of the Broadway musical. This latest adaptation is set in the present day, as the drunk and disorderly Miss Hannigan vents her frustration at her orphan charges, telling them she wishes George Clooney would come and take her away.
Jamie Foxx takes on the role of Will Stacks, a wealthy politician based on the character of Oliver Warbucks. Unlike Warbucks, Stacks appears to have an ulterior motive for bringing an orphan into his life, as the trailer suggests he’s doing it for political purposes.
A selection of other high-profile actors round out the cast, including Bobby Cannavale as Stacks’ political adviser and Australia’s own Rose Byrne as Grace Farrell, Stacks’ assistant.
Produced by Will Smith and Jay-Z, this modern-day retelling will weave selected Jay-Z tracks among the musical’s classic songs such as Hard Knock Life and Tomorrow.
The film has a December 19 US release date, so expect to see it on Aussie screens around Christmas.
