‘Blood-infused’: $1000 treatments Hollywood stars are having before the Oscars
Celebrities are going to extreme lengths to look red carpet-ready ahead of the Academy Awards. And these beauty treatments have to be seen to be believed.
Celebrities are going to extreme lengths to look red carpet-ready for the Oscars.
Blood-infused moisturisers, $900 “penis” facials, and cellulite-busting skin-tightening treatments are among the incredible lengths stars are going to as they prepare for the Academy Awards.
But the treatments don’t come cheap … and they’re very Hollywood.
Top New York-based facialist Georgia Louise created a $US650 ($A909) treatment dubbed the “penis facial” (aka the Hollywood EGF Facial), which is a favourite of Oscar-winners Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett.
BIZARRE $100K OSCARS GIFT BAGS
“We’re using clone stem cells from a baby’s foreskin, which basically is high in EGF (epidermal growth factors) to really restore and repair the skin,” Louise told News Corp Australia.
“And then we use a needle pen … it’s like a vampire facial, but we’re using stem cells from a baby (foreskin).”
Famous faces who are treated at the Georgia Louise Atelier on New York’s Upper East Side include Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Aniston and Amy Schumer.
Before the Oscars this year, Louise did facials on Emma Stone, Game of Thrones’ star Emilia Clarke, along with Victoria’s Secret models Georgia Fowler and Winnie Harlow.
Another shock treatment used by some stars pre-Oscars is a $US1400 ($A1957) moisturiser made, in part, from their own blood, concocted by Dr Barbara Sturm — a German orthopaedic doctor turned skincare guru (she famously invented the “vampire facial” and her on-counter skincare line is stocked at Mecca Cosmetica in Australia).
“It’s using your own platelettes to recover and restore your skin, and using your own antibodies — if you like — to repair your skin,” Louise said, of Dr Sturm’s famous blood cream.
Louise, whose facials are priced from $US400 ($A559), said stars had the equivalent of about $US5000 ($A6992) worth of professional and at-home skin treatments in the six weeks leading up to a red carpet event like the Oscars.
“You want drained skin from all the puffiness, it looks more contoured,” Louise said.
AUSTRALIAN SKINCARE STAR
Celebrity facialist Melanie Grant is behind the fresh-faced complexions of Lara Worthington, Nicole Trunfio, Christine Centenra, Victoria Lee and the Victoria Beckham.
Posh Spice called Grant’s treatment “the most amazing facial” after she attended her in-demand Double Bay clinic while in Sydney last year.
The Australian — who is also an official skincare expert for Chanel — recently unveiled her new location at 8438 Melrose Place in West Hollywood, near Isabel Marant and Chloe’s flagships stores, where her bespoke facials are said to be priced from $750.
(Australian Extra! reporter Renee Bargh had a pre-Oscars treatment there, as did Phoebe Tonkin).
On Grant’s menu of pre-Oscars treatments is a “Camera Ready Facial”, which is described as a “pre-event treatment for a flawless, clear, illuminated complexion ”.
RED CARPET READY
Stars might have a $US600 ($A839) “red carpet facial” — the most expensive treatment at Ole Henriksen Face & Body Spa, whose confidential client list includes a string of movie stars.
Vance Soto, owner of the West Hollywood spa, said the treatment was usually done the day before — or even the day of — the Oscars.
The two-hour facial includes exfoliation, hydration, oxygen, LED lights (to boost collagen and kill surface bacteria) and a MicroPhoto treatment (that involves “light and heat”).
“Celebrities pre-red carpet have the same concerns many of us do before an event or night out,” Soto said.
Ole Henriksen also offers a 50-minute facial-style treatment for the butt — “Get Cheeky” — which costs $US160 ($A223).
Of course, Botox and facial fillers are also rife in Hollywood — and a regular fixture on the Oscars red carpet.
A leading Los Angeles-based cosmetic surgeon, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said actors tended to avoid “invasive” treatments in the days before an event like the Oscars.
Instead, they opt for last-minute “non-surgical skin tightening” such as thermage, pelleve and Venus Freeze or Venue Legacy on the face and body, which can cost between $A120-$A750 per session.
“These treatments stimulate collagen production … there is an instant, immediate tightening effect that occurs and lasts for about a week,” he said.
