Blonde leads Razzies with eight nominations
Hollywood types loves collecting award nominations. But these are eight nominations you don’t want.
If there’s one honour Hollywood egos loathe to receive, it’s a Golden Raspberry Award.
The Razzies are “awarded” to the worst movies of the year, and this season, the leading contender is Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe not-quite-biopic Blonde.
Blonde, which starred Ana de Armas as the doomed star, nabbed eight nominations including Worst Picture, Worst Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay.
Cuban actor de Armas managed to escape the indignity and wasn’t nominated. She is actually in the running for an Oscar nomination tomorrow, an extraordinary feat given how reviled the film is.
In condemning Blonde, the Razzies said it was leading the “pack of cinematic mongrels” as it “‘explores’ the exploitation of Marilyn Monroe by continuing to exploit her posthumously”.
Dominik was personally nominated three times, for director, screenplay and in Worst Couple under the entry, “Andrew Dominik and his issues with women”.
Blonde was adapted by Dominik (Chopper) from a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, a fictionalised biography of Monroe.
Dominik’s film is visually arty but has attracted strident criticism for its depiction of Monroe as a victimised figure who was repeatedly abused by a string of men in her life, rather than as an influential pop cultural icon who made empowering decisions and built a career. It was a total stinker.
Blonde currently has a 42 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an even lower audience score of 32 per cent.
Machine Gun Kelly’s movie Good Mourning was a close second with seven Razzie nominations, followed by Disney’s live-action Pinocchio remake with six.
Tom Hanks was nominated twice for two different roles – Pinocchio and Elvis – while vampire comic book movie Morbius notched up five nods.
The Razzies have been running since 1981 and is traditionally awarded the day before the Oscars. Sylvester Stallone has the honour of the most wins with 10.
Some winners have taken the awards with good humour, even showing up at the ceremony to collect the gong, including Halle Berry for Catwoman, Paul Verhoeven for Showgirls and Sandra Bullock for All About Steve.
