CELEBRITIES have come out in force to support Megan Gale and her battle to stop social media trolls.

Gale took to Instagram this week to voice her frustrations about the constant negative comments directed at her from no-name keyboard cowards, known as trolls.

The problem has become so bad many celebrities are turning off social media and not engaging with fans.

Today host Lisa Wilkinson backed Gale.

"Good on her,'' she said.

"It is the only way to deal with trolls.

"I have no dialogue with trolls whatsoever.

"I block them immediately."

Australia's Next Top Model winner Montana Cox said you just had to be happy with yourself and not take the trolls too seriously.

"You've got to realise there will always be people out there trying to take you down,'' she said. "I turn a blind eye to it.

"That's the only way to deal with it. I don't take any of it seriously. They can have their opinion, but it's not who I think I am."

Gale called the trolls out on Instagram this week after an innocent post about her favourite new hair product attracted dozens of negative comments.

"Only happy, positive people are welcome here, not bullying haters,'' she wrote.

Later on, she said that was all she had to say on the matter, as her response attracted even more online heat.

"I don't want to give it anymore oxygen, I've dealt with it,'' she said. "The more I talk about it, the more they love it."

The face of David Jones, model Jessica Gomes, said it came down to one thing - people needed to be nicer to each other.

"I think we should be kinder to each other online,'' Gomes said. "We need to focus on the positive things and not worry about the petty, negative things on the internet.

"It's pointless.

"I stay away from it."

The issue of trolls came to the public attention in 2012 after the very public breakdown of TV presenter Charlotte Dawson, a prolific user of social media.

Dawson tweeted "you win" after eight hours fighting back against online hate.

Dawson is rare when it comes to celebrities, she often calls trolls out.

Actor Jessica Marais said it wasn't the best approach.

"I don't read what trolls write because I think that's giving them power,'' she said.

"I don't understand negativity on social media.

"I think we should celebrate our successes and not spend time kicking people down."
