Scarlett Johansson shocks with controversial Met Gala dress

WHILE celebrities like Rihanna made headlines for their controversial religious outfits, Scarlett Johansson’s gown was equally as shocking — just not for the reason you might think.

2018 Met Gala: red hot on the red carpet

SCARLETT Johansson has worn a Marchesa dress to the Met Gala, the first celebrity to wear the label since scandal broke about its co-founder Georgina Chapman’s husband Harvey Weinstein.

The Avengers star walked the red carpet on Monday night with boyfriend Colin Jost in the burgundy gown.

The designer dress, which featured ombre hues and floral detailing, was a more modest choice compared to outfits worn by Rihanna and Katy Perry.

It also didn’t adhere to this year’s Met Gala theme, which was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

It is the most major event a celebrity has worn Marchesa to since allegations of Mr Weinstein’s sexual misconduct emerged last year, amid rumours celebrities were shunning the label.

Multiple women, including actors Ashley Judd, Gwyneth Paltrow and Rose McGowan, came forward to accuse the Hollywood producer of sexual harassment and assault.

Reports also alleged movie stars Felicity Huffman, Jessica Chastain and Sienna Miller were pressured into wearing designs from Mr Weinstein’s wife’s label Marchesa.

Ms Chapman set up the label in 2004 and it was often worn by A-listers such as Renée Zellweger, Cate Blanchett and Mischa Barton while promoting Weinstein-produced films.

After allegations against her husband of 10 years emerged, Ms Chapman filed for divorce from Mr Weinstein and has since kept a low profile.

Marchesa cancelled its New York Fashion Week show in January, opting instead to showcase the collection through its website.

Johansson, who starred in the Weinstein-produced Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, has been an avid supporter of the Time’s Up movement but is yet to speak out specifically against Mr Weinstein.
