A holiday snap of 90-year-old Irene Carney in a red polka dot two-piece had the internet world cheering last week, proving there’s no age limit to bikinis.
In the Seafolly Spot On bikini bought from Ballina boutique Lady Watego, Irene (below) holds her own alongside other famous older women who refuse to hide away under mumus and one pieces.

KRIS JENNER, 60
THE reality TV mumager has had four children and is open about undergoing plastic surgery. Keeping Up With The Kardashians filmed her face lift before Kim’s wedding to Kris Humphries and also her breast augmentation.
“I needed a little freshening up before the wedding. Just doing what a girl’s gotta do,” she told E! Online.
As Jenner, proves, clever design elements and accessories can also make a bikini just as flattering as a one piece.
“Darker colours always work better, a panel around the waistline and down to the bottom can trick the eye and print is distracting, so in that way it can be slimming,” McCann says.
ELLE MACPHERSON, 52
MACPHERSON continues to defy her years — and age-appropriate clothing restrictions — in the most perfect way. In a recent Instagram snap, Macpherson beams in a bronze string bikini. But the mother of two, who credits her Super Elixir green supplement for her new lease of life, shrugs off the idea that she’s confounding age limits just because she’s over 50.
“’Beauty at every age’ is such a boring cliche, but beauty is not just reserved for youth,” she said in a 2014 issue of Ocean Drive magazine. “There’s a big movement that supports that. I didn’t feel any kind of milestone pressure turning 50 at all, perhaps because I’ve been preparing for this stage of my life for a long time.
It wasn’t like, Oh my gosh, I’d better get myself together before I turn 50; it was more like I was reborn.”
DEMI MOORE, 52
IT’S hard to believe Moore, posing, right, alongside her young daughters is 52 years old. But while she’s always been fit, Moore had an unhealthy obsession with her body.
“I made it a measure of my own value. I tried to dominate it, which I did, and I changed it multiple times over. But it never lasted and ultimately it didn’t bring me anything but temporary happiness,” she said, speaking to Harper’s Bazaar.
“Does being thin resolve anything? No. The irony is that when I abandoned that desire to dominate my body, it actually became the body that I always wanted. But it only happened when I stopped trying to control it.”
CINDY CRAWFORD, 50
SURE she’s a supermodel, but even Crawford has to work at keeping bikini ready.
“Every year you have to add a little bit more. I still work out. When you exercise, you tend to want to eat better. So that evolves,” she says in her book, Becoming.
“I use sunscreen. I wear hats. I don’t smoke. The secret is, there’s no secret. You just have to do it. I look at my daughter’s skin and it’s like, ‘Awww.’ And her hair is so healthy and shiny. But I’m holding up.”
In a picture posted to her Instagram account last week, it’s clear the hard work is paying off.
KERRI-ANNE KENNERLEY, 62
KAK, as she is affectionately known, posed in a bikini on the cover of Woman’s Day last year. She says it was the first time in 25 years she had worn a two-piece and puts her incredible shape down to weight training.
“I found out I’d lost a lot of bone because of radiation and drugs and stuff from breast cancer and you can’t replace it without more drugs. The only way is weight training, so I’ve been doing weight training twice a week for a few months, it really, really works and that’s why I did it,” she told the magazine.
“I wanted the really important message of women of any age that weight training is very good for your muscle strength, for your bone strength and it is an anti-ageing remedy for your body. It really is and every woman should do weight training!”
HELEN MIRREN, 70
THIS stylish Dame made headlines when she was papped in a red bikini while on holiday in 2008, but she puts the flattering pictures down to a good angle.
“I think the thing that will haunt me for the rest of my life is that bloody photograph of myself in a bikini,” she said in 2011.
Seafolly head designer and creative director, Genelle Walkom said older women should chose cuts that flatter their shape.
“High waisted briefs are a great alternative to a maillot, they define the waistline and give you the maximum coverage you can get from a bikini,” she says.
