GWYNETH PaltrowÂ’s stylist has defended the controversial dress she wore without underwear at the Iron Man 3 Hollywood premiere.

The actress recently complained that she was caught off guard when she realised her gown had sheer panels after it was labelled "the most vulgar, look-at-me, attention-seeking dress" by one fashion critic.

However Elizabeth Saltzman has hit back at critics of the Antonio Berardi dress and said it was a deliberate choice for Paltrow to wear it.

"Not only was it our first choice, it's [also] beautiful, it's cool, it's daring in a no-daring way. Nonthreatening. Elegant," she told Us Weekly. "It looked great on her … it showed off her body. It's spirit without being vulgar."

He explained that the 40-year-old actress was not attention seeking by opting to wear the item.

Instead he insisted she was showing off the results of her hard work with healthy eating and exercise.

"The point is that this girl has taste, this girl has confidence," she continued. "And she's not flaunting anything but the hard work that she's put into being a happy body, happy person, healthy person. You don't see a whole lot of false fakeness going on there like some other people. She's always classic with a twist, classic with an edge."

Gwyneth said she was “humiliated" by the reaction she got with the fashion item when appearing on television later in the week.

She explained that she quickly had to go through a hair removal process in order wear the dress.

"I was doing a show and I changed there and I couldn't wear underwear. I don't think I can tell this story on TV," she laughed. “Well, let's just say everyone went scrambling for a razor. …I work a '70s vibe. You know what I mean?"
