Westworld star Luke Hemsworth reveals he auditioned for Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story

The Hemsworth name may be Hollywood royalty, but that didn’t help Luke score his dream role when he auditioned for one of the biggest franchises ever.

'Westworld' returns for season 3

It’s one of the most iconic pop culture characters of all time.

And Aussie actor Luke Hemsworth, the older brother of Hollywood heavyweights Chris and Liam Hemsworth, came within a whisker of being able to add Han Solo to his acting resume.

The 38-year-old is currently in Australia promoting season 3 of the hit HBO series Westworld (the first episode hits streaming on Foxtel Now today). He told news.com.au he had auditioned for the titular role – originally made famous by Harrison Ford – in the 2018 Disney prequel film Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The part ultimately went to relatively unknown American actor Alden Ehrenreich in a snub Hemsworth admitted “stung”.

“I’ve definitely auditioned for Solo, Han Solo. I really wanted that,” he said.

“That one really hurt more than others because I wanted it so much.

“You develop a thick skin fairly quickly because more often than not you’re getting turned down.”

Discussing the audition process further, Hemsworth, who recently moved from LA to Byron Bay where Chris lives with his family, described it as an “alien environment.”.

“The nature of auditions is you never get feedback,” he said.

“They’re usually pretty weird. You’re just in a chair. It’s really hard.

“Confidence is sometimes … It’s bullsh*t. It’s a bravado.

“You’re pretending, you’re just trying to get through a performance that doesn’t look like you’re sh*tting yourself.

“Everyone is just sitting there waiting for you to do something cool. You quickly have to develop a thick skin otherwise you fall apart.”

As for Westworld, which finally makes its return to screens today, Hemsworth’s character Ashley Stubbs finished season 2 on a dramatic cliffhanger.

In a massive twist, Ashley alluded to being a host in the finale.

News.com.au asked Hemsworth if he knew this when he began portraying Ash back in 2014.

“I didn’t know … and it’s still ambiguous,” he said.

“There were hints. (Executive producer) Lisa Joy would say things and (I’d be like), ‘But hang on?’ and she’d be like, ‘No more questions Luke’.

“I was in Atlanta and the airport shut down, I was trying to get back for a 5am call on the Monday and I missed my flight, so I was stressing.

“There were little titbits, something about the cornerstone, the backstory, so my mind is already going, ‘Hang on, am I or am I not (a host)?

“So I’m five hours late (to set) and I’m quaking in my boots, then me and Tessa (who plays Charlotte Hale) have this intimate interaction scene where I’m explaining why I’m letting her go, and still there was no definite ‘yes you are’.”

As for what that means for Ash going into the new season, Hemsworth can only say one thing for sure.

“He does what’s necessary. If he’s a villain, he doesn’t know he’s a villain,” he said.

“I don’t think he’s a villain, but he is a military guy. You set him in motion and he’ll do it and he won’t question it.”

Westworld season 3 will stream on Foxtel and screen on Fox Showcase from Monday, March 16 at noon
