Tom Hanks released from hospital while wife Rita Wilson remains in isolation

Tom Hanks has now been released from hospital here in Australia – but wife Rita Wilson is still in isolation after their coronavirus diagnosis.

Actor Tom Hanks has been released from the Gold Coast University hospital, while wife Rita Wilson remains in an isolation ward after the A-list couple were both diagnosed with coronavirus last week.

The Hollywood couple, currently staying in Australia as Hanks films an Elvis Presley biopic on the Gold Coast, earlier said they were “taking it one-day-at-a-time”.

“Rita Wilson and I want to thank everyone here Down Under who are taking such good care of us,” Hanks wrote in a note posted to his official Twitter and Instagram accounts alongside a selfie of the pair in good spirits last week. Yesterday, Hanks showed his sense of humour is intact, sharing a photo of an absurdly well-stacked vegemite toast he’d been enjoying in isolation.

The couple’s diagnosis created a wave of panic among sectors of the Australian media, given Wilson had performed two concerts and appeared on Nine’s Today Extra just days before she was confirmed as having coronavirus.

Her diagnosis forced Today Extra hosts David Campbell and Belinda Russell into self-quarantine – both have since tested negative for the disease.

But Nine’s veteran entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins has since tested positive for coronavirus, having met Wilson after her Sydney Opera House show on March 7. Speaking on-air from home yesterday, Wilkins pointed out that, while Wilson was a likely candidate for transmission, “it could be anyone, anywhere.”

They join a growing list of celebrities here and overseas who have gone public with their coronavirus diagnoses, including Aussie singer Thelma Plum, politician Peter Dutton and British actor Idris Elba.
