British actor Bella Ramsey has revealed they identify as non-binary.

The 19-year-old, who shot to fame aged 11 as Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones, told The New York Times in an interview they didn’t “particularly like” being gendered.

“I guess my gender has always been very fluid,” Ramsey said.

“Someone would call me ‘she’ or ‘her’ and I wouldn’t think about it. But I knew that if someone called me ‘he’ it was a bit exciting …

“I’m very much just a person. Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like. But in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”

In a December interview with Elle magazine, which was published this week, Ramsey added they were “hesitant” to talk about personal labels.

“It’s just, publicly, I am hesitant to talk about what those are, because there are still some things that I’m, I guess, becoming comfortable with and figuring out … Actually, I think I’ve probably figured it out, but becoming comfortable with and owning, I suppose,” Ramsey said.

“I think people who can publicly talk about who they are, I think that’s incredibly brave and I look up to those people, but it’s not the sort of thing that I can do yet, really.”

Ramsey is currently gaining a whole new fanbase with their debut on yet another smash-hit franchise, The Last Of Us, a TV adaptation of the wildly popular 2013 video game of the same name.

The Last Of Us follows Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) and teen girl Ellie Williams (Ramsey) in a dystopian world that’s been ravished by a fungus-based virus.

The HBO series, which reportedly cost $13 million an episode, is set 20 years on from a global pandemic that decimated the human population, turning everyone into infectious zombies.

Joel and his partner Tess (Anna Torv) have spent decades surviving as smugglers – encountering pain and heartache along the way – before they encounter young Ellie, who is immune to the infection and could be the key to a cure or vaccine.

Joel and Ellie’s unlikely bond ultimately forms the emotional backbone of the story, as Ellie’s immunity threatens to put her in grave danger.
