Embattled actor Ezra Miller has issued their first statement since the start of a spate of legal problems.

In a statement to Variety, Miller, who identifies as transgender nonbinary, apologised for their actions.

They said: “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment.

“I want to apologise to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behaviour. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”

The actor known for their roles in Justice League, We Need to Talk About Kevin and the Fantastic Beasts franchise was recently charged with felony burglary in Vermont after they broke into a home and stole several bottles of alcohol.

They were also twice arrested this year in Hawaii, once for disorderly conduct and another time for second-degree assault.

They have also been accused of housing minors in an unsafe environment. A Rolling Stone report claimed Miller had been playing host to a young mother and her three children at a property with unsecured guns.

Rolling Stone reported there was video footage of at least eight weapons lying around a living room, including guns being propped up against a pile of stuffed animals.

Miller was recorded in 2020 allegedly choking a woman outside a bar in Iceland.

Miller’s ongoing problems was seen as a risk to their career at the helm of high-profile franchises.

In the DC Extended Universe, they play superhero The Flash. They originated the role in the 2016 movie Superman vs Batman: The Dawn of Justice and has reprised the role twice more.

They have already finished filming on The Flash, which is due for release in 2023. However, there has been speculation over the future of the film after Miller’s run of legal troubles, and promotion for the film was noticeably absent at the recent DC showcase at San Diego Comic-Con.

They will also play the young Salvador Dali in the upcoming Daliland, a feature directed by Canadian filmmaker Mary Harron and also starring Ben Kingsley as the older version of the Spanish artist.

Miller started his career as a teen actor with recurring roles on TV shows Californication and Royal Pains. They have also been in City Island, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Trainwreck.
