Spider-Man star Tom Holland’s surprise career announcement

Spider-Man star Tom Holland has stunned fans with a decision on his career, admitting he’s experienced “a tough time” recently.

Tom Holland has decided to take a break from acting, following a challenging experience on his most recent project.

The Spider-Man: No Way Home star, 27, announced that he was on a career hiatus in an interview with Extra, telling the publication that producing and starring in the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room was “a tough time”.

“We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before. And then on top of that, being a producer, dealing with the day-to-day problems that come with any film set, just added that extra level of pressure.”

Holland clarified that he’d enjoyed his role on set, but that the show “did break him” in the process.

“I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was,” he added.

The British actor plays Danny Sullivan in the crime thriller, which tells the story of an unsuspecting young man who is arrested for a shooting at Rockefeller Center in New York City in 1979.

The Crowded Room also stars Amanda Seyfried and Emmy Rossum.

Holland also opened up about how he’s been spending his sabbatical so far, revealing he’s been doing low-key activities and catching up with family and friends.

“You know, I’ve been going to the garden centre and buying plants and doing my best to keep them alive,” he added. “I’ve just been trying to be a regular bloke from Kingston and just relax.”

Holland found fame as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the blockbuster films.

Holland’s career announcement comes just weeks after he told Entertainment Weekly that the role had led to his decision to quit drinking.

He explained to the publication that he had been sober for over a year, with the thriller taking a toll on him mentally.

“I’m no stranger to the physical aspects of the job doing the whole action-movie thing,” he told EW. “But the mental aspect, it really beat me up and it took a long time for me to recover afterwards, to sort of get back to reality.”

Holland also previously revealed that he’d taken a step back from social mediato protect his mental health.

“I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming,” the actor told fans in an Instagram video message last August.

“I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online and ultimately it’s very detrimental to my mental state. So, I decided to take a step back and delete the app.”

The Crowded Room premieres June 9 on Apple TV+.
