Why Meghan Markle didn’t sign a prenup before marrying Prince Harry

DESPITE Prince Harry having a fortune worth millions, there’s a very good reason Meghan Markle didn’t sign a prenup before their wedding.

THERE’S nothing romantic about a prenup, but many multi-millionaires are still tempted to ask their other half to sign on the dotted line.

With an estimated $123 billion in the bank, the Royals are one of Britain’s richest families, while Prince Harry has a personal fortune of $53 million.

Despite that, it’s thought Harry, 33, (and his grandmother, the Queen) didn’t insist on the Duchess of Sussex, 37, signing a prenup for her second marriage.

It’s expected the Queen also won’t insist on a prenup for her granddaughter Princess Eugenie’s marriage to Jack Brooksbank in October.

Eugenie is rumoured to have a personal fortune worth $8.5 million held in a trust set up by the late Queen Mother, The Times reports.

So why have both Harry and Eugenie avoided a pre-marital contract? As royal expert and author Katie Nicholl told Town & Country, it comes down to the fact that the majority of the royal family’s money and property belong to the sovereign.

So while the royal family might have a high track record for divorce (Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Prince Andrew have all had failed marriages), it hasn’t impacted their wealth.

“I don’t think members of the royal family sign prenuptial agreements,” Nicholl said.

“It’s commonplace with celebrity marriage, but this is not a celebrity marriage, it’s a royal marriage.”

In addition to this prenups can’t be legally enforced in the United Kingdom, however, judges can take them into consideration during divorce proceedings, People reports.
