Meghan Markle’s ‘plain, boring’ wedding dress disappoints
AS Meghan Markle revealed her hugely anticipated wedding dress, many asked: Where’s the sparkle, Markle?
MEGHAN Markle’s wedding dress was a meticulously crafted gown with an incredible tribute to the countries of the Commonwealth hidden in its veil — and yet, many royal watchers have described the finished product as “plain” and “boring.”
Markle’s wedding dress was designed by British designer, Clare Waight Keller, who last year became the first female artistic director at the historic French fashion house Givenchy. The pair met in 2018.
Kensington Palace said Meghan chose the designer for her “timeless and elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanour.”
The clean lines of the dress included an open neckline to frame the shoulders, made in a double silk fabric in white to bring a sense of “fresh modernity”.

Meghan also chose to have all 53 countries of the Commonwealth included in the veil design through floral emblems.
The Commonwealth is expected to be a significant part of the work Prince Harry and Meghan do as a couple and the Palace said Meghan wanted to reflect this.
The veil was five metres long and handmade, with designers washing their hands every 30 minutes. In addition to the Commonwealth flowers it included Meghan’s favourites, Wintersweet, which grows in front of Nottingham Cottage, and the California Poppy, representing her home state.
Despite all the thought that went into the outfit, many royal watchers were underwhelmed, the word “plain” coming up a lot in social media reaction:
Is it bad to say that I liked Kate Middletonâs dress a lot more than Meghanâs? ð

Am I aloud not like Meghans dress? It's to plain, it's to simple, it's not really flattering and I'm just so underwhelmed right now ð¶ð¶ð°ð¼ #royalwedding

Meghan Markles dress was the biggest anti-climax of this year tbh.

The wedding dress was the biggest let down of the year, so plain, so unremarkable, Iâm suing the artistic director of Givenchy who had the nerve to submit that #RoyalWedding

Why is dress so plain and not well fitted? Her hair looks like it got messed up under the veil⦠Where are her people fixing this?#MeghanMarkle #meghansdress #RoyalWedding

I hate Meghan's dress. It's pretty but so PLAIN. Like this is the #RoyalWedding I'd be going all out with the bling

Elsewhere at the wedding, the Duchess of Cambridge raised eyebrows with a recycled outfit she has worn not once. not twice, but at least three times before. The horror.
Kate Middleton stunned in her first outing since giving birth to Prince Louis last month in a primrose yellow wool silk tailored coat by Alexander McQueen — the same designer she wore for her own wedding in 2011. It was matched with a Philip Treacy hat and shoes by Jimmy Choo.
However style mavens were quick to point out she’s worn it in public several times before — including once at the christening of Princess Charlotte in July 2015 and once at the Queen’s birthday in June 2016.
