Meghan Markle persuades ex-husband to drop ‘embarrassing’ TV sitcom plans
THE Suits star was said to be embarrassed and “deeply upset” by her ex-husband’s plans to make a TV show depicting her romance with Prince Harry.
MEGHAN Markle has persuaded her ex-husband to hold off releasing an embarrassing TV comedy show depicting her romance with Prince Harry, sources have revealed.
Meghan’s pals have held secret showdown talks with her ex Trevor Engelson in a bid to persuade him to ditch his TV plans for a sitcom based on her relationship with the royal, according to insiders.
Los Angeles-based Trevor has now agreed to not move forward with the project — at least before the wedding.
Trevor pitched a comedy project to Fox Studios about a fairytale romance with a royal — similar to Meghan and Harry’s love story — last year.
The 41-year-old, who was married to the Suits actor from 2011 to 2013, penned a script about divorcee who remarries a British prince.
He had planned a pilot episode but decided to suspend it for the next few weeks after hearing pleas from Meghan’s LA friends.
The news will come as a welcome relief for Meghan — just days after her father Thomas Markle Sr admitted posing for paparazzi pictures — and then decided to ditch plans to walk her down the aisle claiming he had suffered a heart attack.
Meghan, 36, was understood to be “deeply upset” by her ex husband’s decision to mock her royal romance.
A senior TV executive, who asked not to be named, told Sun Online: “Trevor’s project is currently on hold after several months of anguish for Meghan.
“She reached out to him at first through friends and now they have kept up the pressure and Trevor has pushed things back.
“The plan was for the series to come out during the aftermath of the royal wedding later this summer but things have changed.
“Trevor has focused on other projects after having calls and impromptu meets with Meghan and his old social circle.
“The couple has barely spoken since their divorce, but she did reach out to him — with Harry’s agreement -to thank him for not telling their story in public.
“The TV pilot was a shock, but now everything is paused — for the meantime at least.
“There is a feeling too that it is too soon for a TV network to go straight at the new royals given their popularity and it could flop.
“So that too is a factor, as Trevor has still not confirmed yet if he will walk away from the project.
“While Harry and his lawyers may have some sway in the UK, in the States, Trevor has a much more open opportunity to do what he wants.”
Trevor is currently working as executive producer on his second series of FX series Snowfall, a new Netflix film 13 Minutes and BET documentary called Dream Team about the US 1992 Olympic basketball champs.
The source, who attended the Britweek Innovation Awards in Los Angeles, added: “Trevor has busied himself with other projects for the moment.
“It’s understood there is no guarantee that this is all signed off and settled.
“Trevor was unhappy at his divorce and this attention on him since the Harry relationship is something he has loathed.
“He and Meghan are world away from that Hollywood happy divorce declaration of ‘conscious uncoupling — where people split up, but remain friends like Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow.”
This week Fox released details of new comedies they are trying as pilots for the next six months but no releases from Engelson’s Underground Films were named in their plans.
The pilot was pitched to Fox last September with Engelson hiring Modern Family executive producer Danny Zuker to write and Lancashire director Christine Gernon.
As yet Harry has not made any legal attempts to deal with the matter, but his options remain open.
Trevor has so far refused to discuss his ex wife publicly since she has been dating Harry, 33.
The producer apparently came up with the idea for the sitcom after talking to another producer and musing about what life would be like if he had kids with Meghan and had to share custody of them with the royal family.
Sun Online reached out to Trevor and Kensington Palace for comment.
