Queen Elizabeth hospitalised after suddenly cancelling tour
The Queen spent the night in hospital after suddenly pulling out of an official tour, a Palace spokesman has confirmed.
Queen Elizabeth spent the night in hospital after suddenly cancelling an official tour, it’s been revealed.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the 95-year-old reigning British monarch was hospitalised for tests after pulling out of her planned trip to Northern Ireland this week.
In a statement on Thursday night, a Palace spokesman said: “Following medical advice to rest for a few days, the Queen attended hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary investigations, returning to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today, and remains in good spirits.”
The Queen was reportedly seen by specialists at the private King Edward VII’s Hospital in central London. Her admittance is understood not to be related to coronavirus, which has seen a resurgence in the UK.
It was her first overnight stay in a hospital in nearly a decade.
Concerns over the Queen’s health were first raised on Wednesday after it was revealed she “reluctantly accepted medical advice” to cancel her planned visit to Northern Ireland, where she was expected to undertake a number of appearances over the next two days to mark the centenary.
The Palace said the Queen was in good spirits but “disappointed” that she was unable to attend. No further information was shared on her condition, except that she was resting at Windsor Castle, where she has stayed since the coronavirus pandemic.
However, The Sun later reported that she had, in fact, been taken to hospital.
The late announcement came as a surprise to some, with royal correspondents already arriving on the ground. Just last week, she appeared at the ceremonial opening of the sixth Senedd, in Cardiff, Wales, using a walking stick.
“The Queen has reluctantly accepted medical advice to rest for the next few days,” a Palace spokesman said.
“Her Majesty is in good spirits and is disappointed that she will no longer be able to visit Northern Ireland, where she had been due to undertake a series of engagements today and tomorrow.
“The Queen sends her warmest good wishes to the people of Northern Ireland, and looks forward to visiting in the future.”
It’s unclear whether the Queen’s recent health troubles will impact her planned appearances in the coming weeks, including the climate change summit in Glasgow where world leaders – including Prime Minister Scott Morrison – will attend.
