It took place before the Queen’s coffin was carried out of the Abbey – with their mother Sarah Ferguson appearing to want to join them before sitting back down.

Royalists watching the funeral around the world, were left scratching their heads after the Princesses’ apparently early exit from the service.

One viewer wrote on social media: “Any idea why Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice left the funeral prior to the coffin?”

Another asked: “Anyone know why Eugenie and Beatrice left mid-ceremony? Sarah Ferguson almost left with them but seems to have been told not to?”

However, the two princesses were later seen outside with the rest of the royals as the coffin left Westminster Abbey.

Although Beatrice and Eugenie clearly didn’t leave the funeral altogether, it is unclear exactly why they exited the abbey early.

Thousands of mourners lined the streets with many queuing overnight to catch a glimpse of their beloved monarch.

The King earlier gave a sombre salute as his mother’s casket went by, just minutes after he had led his grieving family in the service.

He was joined by siblings Andrew, Edward and Anne, as well as sons William and Harry, who appeared solemn in reflection as the procession began.

At Wellington Arch, the bearer party lifted the Queen’s coffin from the State Gun Carriage into the glass-backed State Hearse, which Her Majesty helped design.

Bands of the Scots and Grenadier Guards then played a medley of her favourite hymns, including Jerusalem and I Vow To Thee My Country.

As the hearse left the monument for Windsor, the parade gave a royal salute, led by the King, and the national anthem played out.

Charles, the Queen Consort, and the Prince and Princess of Wales, along with other royal family members, then left for Windsor by car, travelling along the M4.

The coffin then arrived at Windsor Great Park, where tens of thousands of people had been gathering since the early hours to bid a final farewell to the Queen.

At the head of the procession, the hearse travelled up Long Walk before making its way to St George’s Chapel for a committal service.
