Prince William and Kate Middleton surprise Windsor at post-coronation party
The Prince and Princess of Wales have rocked up to a street party in Windsor, where they were seen getting among the festivities.
Prince William and Kate Middleton have rocked up to a street party in Windsor, much to the delight of punters.
They arrived at a Coronation Big Lunch along the Long Walk leading up to Windsor Castle, making the short trip from Adelaide Cottage, to which they moved last year.
The crowd of hundreds went wild as the popular royals hopped out of their car and joined in on the celebrations, which were taking place across the UK following King Charles’ crowning on Saturday.
After her showstopping Alexander McQueen ensemble at the coronation, the Princess of Wales was considerably dressed down by comparison for the street party, wearing flat shoes, a white top and pale blue blazer.
At one stage during the festivities, a woman handed the Prince of Wales a paper cup with an unknown drink, which William sipped trustingly before passing it on to his wife.
“Oh, that’s lovely,” Kate said after trying the beverage.
The pair mingled with fans for about 45 minutes, with one heartwarming moment showing Kate comforting a young girl who was overwhelmed with emotion to see the royal in the flesh.
Elsewhere, Princess Anne was spotted popping into a street party in Swindon, Wiltshire, 110km west of London.
It comes as King Charles, Queen Camilla and the rest of the British royal family are all expected to attend the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle Sunday night, local time, which Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Take That (sans Robbie Williams) are headlining.
Nicole Scherzinger, Olly Murs, Paloma Faith and Tiwa Savage are also set to hit the stage.
More A-list stars are getting involved in the concert in pre-filmed sketches, including Tom Cruise, Dame Joan Collins, Bear Grylls and Winnie the Pooh.
The concert, which kicks off at 5am Monday AEST, is running with the theme of ‘Light up the Nation’. With that, light displays are set to sparkle across the UK as the show comes to a close, with iconic locations lighting up with projections, lasers, drone displays and illuminations.
The surprise royal visit followed on from their impromptu walkabout outside Buckingham Palace on the eve of Saturday’s coronation, where they joined King Charles in thanking the thousands of fans who had been camped out along The Mall.
The trio stopped to shake hands and chat with people lining the barricades, thanking them for their support and sharing in their excitement for the weekend’s events.
“How are the kids doing? Are they very excited?” one woman asked Kate as she worked her way through the crowd.
“Excited, a bit nervous, obviously – a big day ahead. But can’t wait, actually,” she responded, before joking: “Hopefully it’s like swans – relatively calm on the outside, a bit paddle-y on the inside.”
William and Kate, along with their three children, Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, arguably stole the show during Saturday‘s historic occasion.
They formed a key part of the royal procession, making their carriage debut as a family-of-five, travelling back to Buckingham Palace from Westminster Abbey behind King Charles and Queen Camilla’s Gold State Coach.
Royals pop up at British street parties
William and Kate weren’t the only royals to make a surprise appearance at one of Britain’s thousands of coronation Big Lunches, with several other members of the family deployed to a random assortment of street parties.
Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence were welcomed by excited locals in Swindon, about 110 kilometres west of London, on Sunday.
The Princess Royal and her husband mingled with revellers at one of the town’s street parties, spending just over an hour chatting with local dignitaries, handing out gifts to children, and debriefing on the previous day’s coronation.

Even Princess Eugenie and her sister Princess Beatrice joined the post-ceremony celebrations, surprising party-goers in Windsor, where they handed out prizes to local kids who’d taken part in a colouring competition.

Britain puts on a celebratio
Even without a royal cameo, millions of Brits were happy to celebrate the coronation weekend with banquets and street parties with long tables, paper crowns and bunting strewn across the streets.
Boroughs all over London put on their own Big Lunch events, including Mayfair’s Grosvenor Square, where a concert was set up amid a backdrop of bunting, flags, decorative yeoman, and food stalls.
Fancy cakes and, of course, coronation quiches appeared to be the menu trends of the day, as revellers decked themselves out in Union Jack-themed costumes and accessories to match their surroundings.
Even US First Lady Jill Biden was spotted getting amongst it, joining other VIP guests at a Downing Street street party alongside British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
