‘Underestimated’ and ‘overly dismissed’: Netflix boss defends Harry and Meghan

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have broken their silence over a rumour that sparked controversy over the weekend.

On Saturday, UK newspapers suggested that Netflix had approached the couple about filming a new documentary about Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana to mark the 30th anniversary of her death.

The proposed documentary would form part of a new long-term deal with the Sussexes.

It would have marked the second deal the streaming giant had made with the couple after their original five-year, $100 million partnership.

“The idea is that it would be a solo project for Harry, who would be a co-executive producer as well as hosting and narrating the series,” an insider told The Express.

“He is uniquely placed, not only to talk about the woman he knew as his mother, but also to examine her role as an enduring social and cultural icon still beloved by so many.”

However, a source close to the pair has since told The Independent that the reports are simply “not true”.

After the original story broke, royal fans rushed to social media to lash out at Harry and Meghan.

In a Reddit thread, one user wrote, “In the end, Harry merches off his dead mother for dollars. If this is true, it’s utterly despicable.”

“Selling out the Royal Family is all they have ever had to offer. These two should be shunned,” another said.

“I really hope William steps in to stop this s**tshow, maybe he can sue his brother or something,” added another.

Harry and Meghan’s $100 million deal has spawned an array of panned projects from the pair, with the latest, With Love, Meghan, being savaged by critics.

Harry’s polo doc went largely unwatched; and their heartstring-tugging Paralympic-themed series Heart of Invictus failed to make an impact.

Despite the criticism, a second season of Meghan’s lifestyle series is set to debut on the streaming giant later this year. It was reportedly filmed at the same time as the first season.
