Prince Andrew sparked yet more controversy on Saturday when he showed up to Westminster Abbey for his brother, King Charles III’s coronation, in ceremonial robes.

The Duke of York walked into the abbey wearing his formal Order of the Garter robes, despite the king reportedly not allowing him to wear his regalia to the historic event.

Prince Harry, on the other hand, was forced to wear a plain suit.

Earlier, onlookers on the grandstand in front of Buckingham Palace and a crowd gathered down The Mall in London boored Andrew as his state car drove out of the palace and down the famous tree-lined road.

Prince Andrew had previously been banned by the late Queen Elizabeth from wearing the ceremonial robes in public at her last Garter Day at Windsor Castle last June. He was also not permitted to wear his military uniform to his mother funeral last September or to his father Prince Philip’s funeral the year prior.

While Prince Andrew appeared to defy his brother’s orders, King Charles’ son Prince Harry refrained from wearing his military uniform to the coronation as, like Andrew, he is no longer a working royal.

Instead, Harry – who served two tours of Afghanistan – wore a dark suit with his medals pinned to the lapel.

Neither Prince Andrew and Prince Harry played a role in the ceremony, and they did not appear in the carriages or processions like other members of the royal family.

Once inside the abbey, both men were relegated to the third row as the first row was reserved for senior working royals – and their names or titles were not included in the program.

Prince Andrew stepped down from royal life in late 2019 following his disastrous interview about his controversial friendship with sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein. He was also sued by a woman who alleged he sexually assaulted her when she was 17.

Andrew has vehemently denied the claims and the case was reportedly settled out of court.
