Palace confirms Prince Christian has tested positive to coronavirus

The teen son of Tasmanian-born Princess Mary of Denmark and Prince Frederik has been struck down by the virus, forcing the family into quarantine.

Denmark’s Princess Mary, Prince Frederik and their children are in isolation after their eldest son Prince Christian tested positive for COVID-19.

The palace has confirmed that the 15-year-old – who is second in line to the throne behind his father – contracted coronavirus from an outbreak at his high school.

In a statement, the palace revealed the teenage prince was diagnosed with the potentially lethal illness over the weekend.

“Yesterday, Sunday 6 December 2020, the Crown Prince Couple were briefed about a local outbreak of COVID-19 at Tranegårdskolen in Hellerup. Subsequently, Prince Christian has tested positive for COVID-19,” the statement reads.

“His Royal Highness is in isolation in Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg. Other than the Crown Prince family, Prince Christian has not been in contact with other members of the royal family very recently.

“In connection with the test result, the Royal Danish House has received guidance from the Danish Patient Safety Authority concerning infection detection and testing of the Crown Prince family. In coming days, the family will stay in isolation in Frederik VIII’s Palace until it is once again safe to discontinue the isolation according to the existing guidelines.”

The family – including Princess Isabella, 13, and nine-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine – will remain in isolation at the palace located in the Danish capital Copenhagan for the standard two-week isolation period.

Denmark’s reigning monarch – Prince Christian’s grandmother, Queen Margrethe II – is 80, placing her in the high-risk category when it comes to the pandemic.

The coronavirus has already affected other Royal Families across Europe, with Prince Charles and Prince William both contracting the illness earlier this year.

Jazmin Grimaldi, the daughter of Prince Albert II of Monaco, also tested positive to COVID-19 this year, as did Belgium’s Princess Claire.

Princess Mary – born Mary Donaldson of Hobart – famously met Prince Frederik at the Slip Inn pub in Sydney when the prince was visiting Australia during the 2000 Summer Olympics. The pair announced their engagement in 2003 and tied the knot the following year.

Princess Mary will automatically become the Queen of Denmark once her husband takes the crown.
