‘Open to ridicule’: Meghan Markle’s ‘behind the scenes’ Vogue video left Palace aides ‘cringing’
A candid video of Meghan Markle is only seeing the light of day now, six months after it was filmed, amid fears of a backlash.
Meghan Markle’s “behind the scenes” Vogue clip reportedly left Palace aides cringing and fearing a social media backlash.
The video of her messing around in a joke hat and party blower, which was filmed in August last year, was only last week released on the Sussex Royal Instagram account.
It was to celebrate her guest-edited edition of Vogue being the best-selling of the decade.
But making it public had been warned against by Buckingham Palace aides, the Daily Mail reports, over fears it would be seen as too frivolous.
And in recent weeks it has been feared the clip would be made into Megxit memes — after she and Prince Harry stepped down as senior royals.
“In all honesty, people are just cringing about this,” one royal insider said yesterday.
“People have this idea that palace advisers are a bit po-faced but that simply isn’t true. Just look at the brilliant footage of the Queen when she took part in that James Bond skit with Daniel Craig to highlight the London Olympics. But this just leaves her (Meghan) open to ridicule. It just goes to show where their priorities lie. Likes and clicks online.”
In the two-minute video, Meghan, 38, sat down with British Vogue editor Edward Enninful to reflect on how they worked together for the 2019 September issue.
Now that Prince Harry, 35, and Meghan have moved to Canada with son Archie, insiders claimed the reason the video has been showed now “part of her plan to take back control” of their image.
‘THIS LEAVES HER OPEN TO RIDICULE’
The clips begins with the Duchess saying she originally got in contact with the “fashion bible” editor in January 2019 to ask if he would assist her with her Smart Works charity clothing collection.
Describing their first meeting, he explained, “I remember walking into Kensington Palace and I was so excited. And I was like, ‘Lovely to meet you, Duchess.’ And you were like, ‘Call me Meghan!’”
The cover – which had a reflective panel on the front to invite the reader to be their own “force for change” – featured 15 “trailblazers” including Jameela Jamil, Laverne Cox and New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern.
Explaining why she put the reflective panel on the front, Meghan said, “Having the mirror – anyone, no matter who they are – picking up this issue, should be able to see themselves in it. And that’s what I feel really proud that we’ve accomplished.”
To celebrate the issue going to press, Meghan then surprised the editor with some glittery hats and party horns.
The video ends with the pair calling each of their “forces for change” figures to let them know they had been chosen for the cover.
It comes as Prince Harry and Meghan have sacked all of their UK staff in yet another move away from their royal teams.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to have told their “very loyal” team back in January, after announcing they were quitting the royal family.
Harry and Meghan closed their Buckingham Palace office, sending a clear message that they never plan to live in England again, the Daily Mail reports.
The couple fled with baby Archie to Canada where they are currently holed up in an £11 million ($21 million) mansion on Vancouver Island.
