Minute silence to be held for Queen’s day of mourning on Thursday

A major new detail of Thursday’s public holiday Day of Mourning for Queen Elizabeth II has been revealed.

Australians across the country will pause for a minute’s silence on Thursday to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Commonwealth Flag Officer confirmed the minute’s silence would take place at 11am AEST at the beginning of a national service broadcast out of Canberra.

On Australia’s national day of mourning, the Australian flag will remain at half mast until the end of the day on all Australian government buildings, while vice-regal standards will remain at full mast.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the one-off public holiday would be an opportunity for all Australians to “pay tribute to the life of the Queen”, outside of a work and study setting.

On Thursday, a national memorial service will be held at Parliament House with all state and territory leaders in attendance.

The service will be broadcast live across the country at 11am AEST and begin with a minute’s silence.

All Australians are encouraged to “take time to pause and reflect” on the Queen’s decades-long service “wherever you may be”.

On Friday, federal MPs and senators alike will spend hte day moving motions of condolences in Parliament House.

That will conclude the two-week long mourning process following the death of the Queen.
