Meghan Markle’s final words to palace staff before royal exit
The emotional farewell Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had with palace staff before their grant exit has been revealed.
The final words Meghan Markle said as she and Prince Harry farewelled palace staff more than two years ago have been revealed.
The emotional moment before The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended their final official event as senior royals was described in the book Finding Freedom, written by journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Duran.
In January 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan announced they were effectively resigning as “senior members of the Royal Family” and working to become “financially independent”.
In March 2020, they attended the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, their final event as working members of the royal family.
But before that, there was a tearful goodbye to their palace aides.
“I can’t believe this,” Meghan said through tears as she hugged a young female aide, according to the book.
The authors wrote: “Harry quietly slipped through the door of the 1844 Room to say hello, and the reality – and the emotions – finally set in.

“Meghan turned around to hug goodbye the last remaining people in the room, including an author of this book.
“She embraced some of the dedicated team members whose tireless efforts – to promote the couple’s work, launch landmark projects, and deal with the near-daily crisis brought on by the tabloids – had come to an abrupt end.”
Meghan then changed into her green dress and joked about how it would be the last hat she would wear for a while.
