Meghan Markle’s ex-BFF Jessica Mulroney distraught after being ‘ditched’ over race row
A “devastated” Jessica Mulroney is holding crisis talks with her agents after losing the bulk of her career – along with her friendship with Meghan Markle.
Meghan’s devastated former best friend was ditched so the Duchess could appear “woke”, it has been claimed.
And Jessica Mulroney believes the royal rejection may have ruined her career.
The Sun has revealed bombshell details about why Mulroney is distraught over the breakdown in the friendship after she was caught up in a race row, with claims she has told associates she feels a lack of support from Meghan.
Mulroney’s concerned agents have been hosting a series of meetings with power players in Hollywood over the past week discussing how to rescue her career without the Duchess of Sussex’s help.
A source told the publication: “Jessica’s team have made it clear that she feels completely ditched by Meghan and fears she is going to cut her out of her life for good.
“She’s completely distraught and devastated because Meghan has done nothing to stand up for her publicly. Jessica is terrified she will never work again.
“Meghan has forsaken her most loyal friend just to look woke.”
Former actress Meghan, 38, met Mulroney, 40, in Toronto while filming US legal drama Suits. But she distanced herself from her after she was exposed by Canadian influencer and blogger Sasha Exeter for using her “wealth and privilege” to attempt to shut her up in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The scandal started last month when Exeter posted a “call to action” to people with large online followings to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
She revealed that Jessica seemed to think this was aimed at her – even though it mentioned nobody by name – and sent her a string of offensive messages.
Exeter also claimed Jessica spoke to sponsors and companies that worked with her, which she said was “an attempt to silence a black woman during this movement behind closed doors”.
She called her response “textbook white privilege”.
Exeter then shared screenshots that showed Mulroney threatening to sue her. Soon after, Mulroney was sacked from her roles on bridal show I Do, Redo and Good Morning America.
But a source close to the stylist said: “She was stupid and tone deaf, but she’s definitely not racist.”
After the scandal, Mulroney – married to former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s son Ben, 44 – tried to apologise by referring to her friendship with Meghan.
She wrote on Instagram: “I have lived a very public and personal experience with my closest friend where race was front and centre.”
However, her work prospects now appear in tatters as many companies employed her partly because of her connection to the royal, according to sources.
The insider said: “She is losing so much work from brands who loved her connection to Meghan in the past but now feels she has become toxic.
“All it would take is for Meghan to go out on a shopping trip with Jessica to show she still has her support. But the clear indication is that there’s not going to be any show of support like that.
“It’s a brutal blow after a 10-year friendship. Jessica has been there for Meghan through thick and thin.”
Mulroney and Meghan became friends shortly after she joined the cast of Suits in 2011.
Meghan started spending most of her time in Toronto and they quickly bonded over their shared love of yoga and fashion.
Mulroney was a useful friend for the aspiring actress to have, as she is a high-profile stylist, influencer and socialite in Canada.
The pair quickly became close and started taking holidays together, posting pictures of their trips on social media.
When Prince Harry, 35, and Meghan started dating and he visited her in Toronto, Mulroney and her husband would host the couple at their family home.
As Meghan and Harry’s relationship blossomed and became more public, Mulroney also found herself in the spotlight.
When Meghan was seen with Harry at the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games in 2017, she had her mother, Doria Ragland, alongside her as well as Mulroney and Markus Anderson – who is believed to have introduced her to the Prince.
Mulroney was said to be Meghan’s “unofficial wedding planner”, jetting to London to finalise arrangements for the big day in 2018.
She also attended a small hen’s party for the future royal and made herself available for dress fittings.
Mulroney was even said to have helped Meghan choose Givenchy as the designer.
Both Mulroney and her husband attended the wedding and all three of her children took part in the ceremony – Ivy, then four, was a bridesmaid and her then seven-year-old twins Brian and John were pageboys.
In February last year, she also attended Meghan’s baby shower in New York along with stars, including tennis ace Serena Williams.
All the attention saw Mulroney’s celebrity status soar, but some friends say that made Meghan uncomfortable.
However, the timing of the fallout could be particularly awkward for the Duchess because Mulroney could play a pivotal role in Meghan’s upcoming court case with the Mail on Sunday.
Mulroney is widely believed to be the anonymous friend who briefed People magazine about the letter Meghan sent to her father, Thomas Markle.
Sources told The Sun that Meghan may need to try to keep Mulroney on side to ensure she does not go rogue if asked to participate in the case.
However, Meghan has famously been accused of ghosting those who were once close to her, with everyone from her school friends to her father to Piers Morgan claiming to have been brutally cut off.
The source said: “When Meghan makes a decision to ghost someone she doesn’t usually go back.
“But, when it comes to Jessica, hopefully she has learnt her lesson from the past and realises that it’s not a great idea.
“Jessica knows all her secrets and everything she’s been through. This is not someone she wants to make an enemy of at this time.”
