King Charles coronation: Memes that made social media laugh

Royal sleuths are convinced the Duchess used a particular set of skills, skills acquired over a very long career, to make the coronation a nightmare for people like King Charles.

No, the answer is no Meghan Markle did not sneak into the coronation in disguise.

But that hasn’t stopped internet sleuths from pouncing on the wild new conspiracy theory, or perhaps just post-coronation meme therapy, of the clearly disguised coronation guest kitted out in classic spy craft of wig, oversized glasses and fake moustache.

Clearly, that was Ms Markle, given her ability to transform as an accomplished actress with a very particular set of skills, skills she has acquired over a very long career, skills that make her a nightmare for people like the royal family.

In the absence of any sightings of Ms Markle over the coronation weekend, thirsty royal watchers have begun to see her everywhere.

“[Meghan], you’re not fooling us...” wrote Bob Cryer on Twitter.

“Just wait until the polyjuice potion wears off,” replied Simon Wickenden.

While Buckingham Palace confirmed previously that Ms Markle would not be in attendance, they have remained silent on accusations she bamboozled palace security with a fictional shapeshifting from the Harry Potter world of witchcraft and wizardry.

Fact-checkers, however, have confirmed that the guest with an uncanny resemblance to Ms Markle-in-disguise was, in fact, Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkins.

Sir Jenkins’ music formed part of the coronation ceremony as part of the King’s appreciation for Welsh culture gained during his long King-in-waiting years as the Prince of Wales.

Sir Jenkins told the BBC before the coronation that was “honoured” to have a part in the crowning of King Charles III.

“It obviously sums up Welsh culture -- the harp -- and he [King Charles III] has always supported Welsh music,” said Jenkins, 79.

“I don’t know whether he chose it, but he was happy to have it there. I know he likes it, otherwise he wouldn’t have asked me.”

BIG A**E SWORD

When you’ve got little Prince Louis’ comic real-life antics, who needs memes to brighten a royal event?

All of us, of course - and the coronation has been no exception, sparking a flood online wit.

Top marks for the speedster who turned around the meme of a bethroned King Charles being handed a copy of Prince Harry’s wave-causing memoir Spare in place of the coronation book.

And the web was alight with questions as to the identity of, and jokes about, the aforementioned stylish woman bearing a blade as part of the official processions.

The answer was Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House of Commons, Conservative MP and a contender for the Prime Minister’s job last year, until she was knocked out of the running by Liz Truss, who infamously became the UK’s shortest-serving PM with just 49 days in the job before being dumped. Maybe Mordaunt has powers greater than that sword...?

The cheeky youngest of the Prince and Princess of Wales, five-year-old Louis, also featured in quick-reaction comedy going viral - with an image of him yawning needing no caption.

And we rated this variation, showing a special bond with his grandfather, the main man:

Before the ceremony even got underway, other pics were flying around of the lad’s greatest hits at other occasions, such as last year’s Platinum Jubilee.

Back to the main man, Charles himself - after the Archbishop of Canterbury’s awkward struggle to fit the crown on the king’s head, this meme hit the spot perfectly.

Coronation memes flooded the internet.

And a big chunk of the Twitter brigade who have never moved on from Frozen were loving

And the spate of artists unable or unwilling to perform at the Coronation Concert on Sunday sparked gags like this:

Some memes were a little more mocking, such as this food-related creation:

Many of the most pointed - and tasteless - ones were directed at Camilla, from those who see themselves in the camp of Charles’ first wife Princess Diana.
