Other members of the crowd chanted “God save the King” and “shame on you” as the protester was arrested.

The long-haired and unshaven demonstrator smiled for press photographers as he was carried away by police officers.

Charles and Camilla are in York to unveil a statue of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The King did not seem particularly bothered by the disturbance and carried on with the engagement.

He continued with a traditional ceremony that sees the sovereign welcomed to York by the Lord Mayor.

It was last carried out by the Queen in 2012.
