Kate Winslet reveals subtle way Queen ended their conversation
Kate Winslet has dished on the hilariously subtle way Queen Elizabeth let her know she was done talking to her during their encounter.
Kate Winslet has revealed the Queen had a subtle way of letting her know their chat was over when she got her CBE — by pushing her hand away.
The Oscar-winning actress, 44, met the monarch when she was awarded the honour at Buckingham Palace in 2012 and spoke of the memorable moment, reports The Sun.
Recalling on the Graham Norton Show, Winslet said: “She did this most extraordinary thing.
“First of all, she’s got the most incredible skin and beautiful bouncy hair.
“Of course, there is a system and she is very well rehearsed and very well practised at this. You are told what to do and you step forwards and curtsy or bow or whatever fumble, terrible thing I probably did.
“And then you put out your hand to shake it, and she sort of gives you this suggestive nudge backwards, like, ‘You’re done, that’s it. Go back again’.
“I was like, ‘Oh, OK’. I wasn’t expecting that.”
Norton asked what Winslet had said to the Queen, 93, when she received her honour.
She continued: “She said, ‘Congratulations on all your achievements’. She said, ‘You are a mother aren’t you?’
“And I said yes, and she said, ‘Well, that is the only job’.
“And I thought ‘good lady’. I was really, really touched that she said that.”
Norton jokingly cut in making a pushing back motion and said: “And then she went ‘better get back to it!’”
Winslet laughed: “Fair enough, I have to say fair enough.”
The actress is mum to Mia, 18, with first husband Jim Threapleton, and Joe, 15, with second spouse Sam Mendes, and Bear Blaze, 5, with third husband Ned Rocknroll.
Speaking afterwards, Winslet, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2009 for The Reader, said the royal encounter was “incomparably overwhelming”.
Winslet added of her CBE: “The sense of gravity is enormous and you very much feel you are being acknowledged by the whole country in a way.”
It’s not the first time the Queen has had a comical encounter with a celebrity.
The monarch gave Lewis Hamilton a dressing down over his table manners, the F1 star has revealed.
A year after he was presented with his MBE in 2009, Hamilton was one of eight guests to be invited to lunch with the monarch, where he made a social faux pas.
Speaking to Graham Norton, he said: “I was excited and started to talk to her but she said, pointing to my left, ‘No, you speak that way first and I’ll speak this way and then I’ll come back to you’.
“She is a sweet woman and we talked about how she spends her weekends, houses and music. She is really cool.”
