Royal engagement: Kate Middleton ‘thrilled’ over the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

THE Duchess of Cambridge has revealed how “excited” she and Prince William are over the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

THE Duchess of Cambridge said she’s “absolutely thrilled” for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as she stepped out in London a day after her brother-in-law’s engagement was announced.

Discussing Monday’s happy news, the Duchess said: “William and I are absolutely thrilled. It’s such exciting news.

“It’s a really happy time for any couple and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this happy moment.”

Her comments came the morning after Ms Markle hailed her as “wonderful” on British TV.

During an interview alongside new fiance Prince Harry, Ms Markle said Kate had been an “amazing” source of support for her.

The Duchess made the comments outside an art gallery in London after visiting the Foundling Hospital, the UK’s first children’s charity and first public art gallery.

In their first joint interview, Harry and Ms Markle said they were set up on a “blind date” by a mutual friend in London last July, revealing they were able to keep their relationship out of the spotlight for six months.

They were, however, “totally unprepared” for the media attention that came once the news broke. “It’s not easy for anybody,” said Harry.

“But at the end of the day she chooses me and I choose her and whatever we have to tackle together or individually, we’ll always be together as a team.”

As she showed off her engagement ring, Ms Markle had said she was “so very happy”.

The ring, estimated to be worth $350,000, was designed by Harry, and included diamonds that once belonged to the late Princess Diana.

Ms Markle, who is bi-racial, divorced and an avowed feminist, does not fit the mould of most British royals and she admitted some of the media coverage about her was “disheartening”.

But the prince’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth II — whose beloved corgis have taken a shine to Ms Markle — led the chorus of congratulations, saying she was “delighted for the couple”.

The wedding is due to take place in the British spring.

Harry said his mother would have been “over the moon” that he was marrying Markle. “They would have been thick as thieves,” he said.
