William and Kate have made their first appearance at the annual Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey as the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Kate was characteristically stylish in a navy Erdem peplum jacket and skirt with a white embroidered print and matching hat and heels, while William co-ordinated his tie with his wife’s outfit.

The couple left their three kids at home and joined other royals including King Charles, Camilla, and the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh – Edward and Sophie – and the Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence for the high-profile occasion.

Her accessories also included a nod to both her in-laws: She opted to wear Princess Diana’s iconic sapphire and diamond earrings along with a Prince of Wales feathers brooch, which was a gift from the King.

The 2020 Commonwealth Day event was famously Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s last joint appearance with his family before they stepped back from royal duties and left the UK.

The service honours the 56 countries and nations around the world that make up the Commonwealth – and this year’s theme was “Forging a Sustainable and Peaceful Common Future”, reflecting the new monarch’s commitment to sustainability.

After filling in for his ailing mother in 2022, Charles led the service for the first time this year as King.

In his speech, he paid tribute to the late Queen and urged people to “strive together” to achieve a “global common good”.

“Commonwealth Day was an occasion of particular pride for my beloved mother, the late Queen – a treasured opportunity to celebrate our Commonwealth family, to whose service she dedicated her long and remarkable life,” he said.

“In succeeding Her Majesty as head of the Commonwealth, I draw great strength from her example, together with all that I have learnt from the extraordinary people I have met, throughout the Commonwealth, over so many years.”

Charles added: “By listening to each other, we will find so many of the solutions that we seek.”
