Kate Middleton recycles 10-year-old dress at Earthshot Prize in London

Kate Middleton and Prince William hit the red carpet in London last night, and royal watchers were quick to point out something amazing about Kate’s frock.

Kate Middleton has recycled one of her oldest gowns for a star-studded red carpet event in London.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 39, attended the inaugural Earthshot Prize awards with her husband Prince William today, making an eco-friendly statement by donning a lilac Alexander McQueen dress she famously wore in LA during the couple’s first joint visit to the US back in 2011.

The glamorous dress features a gold waistband and floating skirt hem, which was custom made for the Duchess by her favoured English designer, who also made her 2011 wedding dress.

William, for his part, also re-wore a dark green velvet blazer, pairing it with a turtleneck and black pants.

The Earthshot Prize awards were launched in 2020 by Prince William and Sir David Attenborough, with five awards presented to individuals or organisations who significantly help the environment.

Winners were granted $1.4 million each to develop further solutions to combat climate change.

The ceremony rolled out a fitting “green” carpet for a star-studded guest list, including the Duke and Duchess, British actresses Emma Watson and Emma Thompson, as well as singer Ed Sheeran who performed at the event.

Emma Watson also donned a recycled gown – which was made from 10 different dresses bought from Oxfam charity shops.

The ceremony is set to change locations each year, with William revealing next year’s event will take place in the US.

“I hope you agree that London and the UK has put on quite a show for our first year. So, for the second year, we need to pass the baton to a country whose leadership is essential for all five of our Earthshots,” William said.

“Where better than the nation that inspired the Moonshot all those years ago. I’m delighted to announce that the Earthshot Prize will be heading to the United States of America in 2022.”

William and Kate were last in the US in 2014, when they visited New York for a three-day work trip.

Kensington Palace did not comment on whether or not the duo would attend next year’s event in the States, though it will be interesting if they do decide to make the trip given the US is now home to William’s brother Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex live in the affluent area of Montecito in California, with their two children, son Archie, 2, and daughter Lilibet Diana, who was born in June.

Meghan and Harry are also staunch activists for climate change, so perhaps a royal reunion is on the cards for 2022.
