Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are facing criticism for their new partnership with a company that sells skin-whitening creams — with some questioning how the deal squares with their anti-racism advocacy, according to reports.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced last week that they joined forces with Procter & Gamble, which sells a controversial Olay skin-lightening cream, the Mirror reported.

“Meghan has talked a lot about the issue of race and racism, so this does stick out like a sore thumb,” Alex Malouf, a former Procter & Gamble executive, told the outlet.

The company’s Olay brand sells the White Radiance moisturiser in India, Malaysia and Singapore, theDaily Mailreported.

Skin-lightening creams are advertised for their ability to reduce the concentration or production of melanin, which gives skin its pigment.

Critics have called for similar products to be taken off shelves, saying they’re inherently racist and colourist.

Nina Davuluri, who was the first Indian American to win Miss America, has argued that the creams promote a “racist” ideology “that you need white skin to be beautiful, you need white skin to be successful.”

Joanne Rondilla, a professor at San Jose State University, added that the Sussexes had a “responsibility” to address the concerns about the product with the company.

“Like everyone else around the world, I saw that interview with Oprah that Meghan did,” she told the outlet.

“It was important for [Meghan} to bring up these issues of colorise. I don’t think this partnership advances that conversation.”
