In their new Netflix series, the couple spilled all the details – and even shared photos and videos – from the night Harry popped the big question.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have finally revealed the full story behind their engagement in 2017, even sharing never-before-seen pictures of the actual moment it unfolded.

In the second episode of their highly-anticipated new Netflix documentary series, Harry admitted that he’d actually “wanted to do it earlier”, but the logistics, including getting permission from his grandmother, the late Queen, had slowed him down.

“I did pop a bottle of champagne while she was roasting a chicken, and that did kind of slightly give the game away,” he said in the interview.

“She goes, ‘You never drink champagne, what’s the occasion?’ And I said, ‘oh, I just had it lying around, you know, whatever’.”

Meghan then interjected, laughing: “It was a magnum!”

“It wasn’t that I knew she’d say yes, but she’d already moved (Meghan’s dog) Guy over, so I had Guy as a hostage,” Harry joked.

The Duke of Sussex went on to explain that he’d set up 15 candles in the garden at Kensington Palace in preparation to pop the big question.

A short, clip of Meghan on the phone to a friend named only as “Jess” - quite possibly her close friend Jessica Mulroney - was then played, showing her excitedly whispering: “Oh my God, Jess, Jess. It’s happening, it’s happening! Oh my God! He told me not to peek!”

Harry then revealed that he “of course” got down on one knee – as grainy, never-before-seen pictures flashed up on screen, including of Harry with a ring box in his hand, patting her dog, and surrounded by flowers and candles, and then a selfie of the beaming, newly-engaged couple.

The new insight into the night of their proposal came after a surprising revelation about the origins of their romance was dropped in episode one.

“We met on Instagram,” Harry told the filmmakers. “I was scrolling through my feed and someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them and I thought ‘Who is that?’”

The couple explained that the friend later reached out to Meghan to see if she was interested in meeting the royal, and after inspecting the “beautiful photography and environmental shots” on his Instagram feed, she agreed to a date.

Meghan added that she had been in London to attend Wimbledon and met Harry at a bar – and their romance was almost over before it began, when Harry was very late.

“I didn’t know him,” Meghan said. “So [when he was late] it’s like ‘Oh, is this what he does?’ No. I’m not doing this. Guys who have so much of an ego that you think any girl would sit around and wait half an hour for you, I was just not interested in that.”

But when Harry showed up red-faced, sweaty and clearly mortified at his lateness, Meghan forgave him, and the rest is history.

Harry & Meghan is a six-part Netflix series directed by Oscar-nominee Liz Garbus. It is the flagship offering in the couple’s rumoured $183 million multi-year content deal with the streaming giant.

It’s a project that has been in the works for months, with two trailers being released in the past two weeks, both making headlines around the world.

The first three episodes landed around the world on December 8. The next and final three will drop one week later on December 15.
