The Sussexes — who also have Oprah Winfrey as a celebrity confidante — told the singer about their Megxit plans before they revealed them to Queen Elizabeth II, according to the report.
“He’s an inspiration, an almost ‘motherly’ figure,” a source told the paper of the pair’s close ties to Sir Elton.
“They made their decision alone, but he’s a shoulder to lean on and listened as they spoke about their plans,” the source said, calling Sir Elton “a constant support” for the couple.
A source close to Elton told the paper that the star “has been their rock”.
“So while he would never tell them what to do, he has been a listening ear and support throughout,” the source said.
A spokesman for the singer later insisted to The Post, however, that Megxit still “came as a surprise” to him.
“The first that Elton heard of the details and timing of Harry and Meghan’s plans was when the announcement went up on their Instagram,” the spokesperson insisted.
A rep had told The Mirror that “Elton supports the fact Harry and Meghan are admirably taking control of their own lives.”
“He cares about them and their family deeply and is fully supportive of any decisions the couple make, knowing they are made by them alone, without outside influence and with their future happiness and wellbeing in mind,” the rep said.
