Australia reacts to Harry and Meghan’s tell-all interview with Oprah
As the interview aired in Australia, many saw the royal soap opera as a reason to get rid of the monarchy’s influence on the country.
While an internet blackout may have been the only way to avoid the bombshells from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview, Aussies have shared their thoughts on the royal saga — including renewed calls for the country to become a republic.
Writer Benjamin Law was not afraid to reveal how invested he was in the interview.
Not ashamed to say I have put on a plastic eating dress and am eating the Oprah-Meghan-Harry interview UP.

But he followed it up with a call to end the monarchy.
“Abolish the monarchy and replace every British royal statue with busts of Oprah’s “what” face reacting to Meghan’s disclosure a royal was concerned about Archie’s skin tone,” he wrote.
Meghan and Harry revealed in the interview that an unnamed member of the royal family expressed concern about how dark-skinned Archie would be when he was born, leaving Oprah momentarily speechless.
Law wasn’t the only one to call for the monarchy’s head with some users identifying the royal turmoil as a reason for Australia to become a republic, including federal MP for Bruce Julian Hill.
“The British Royal Family & their self-absorbed ‘Harry & Meghan’ goings on are irrelevant to modern Australia,” he tweeted. “Their latest pathetic privileged escapades remind us we need an Australian as Head of State. No Kings, Queens or Presidents. Make the Governor-General Head of State.”

“All this #OprahMeghanHarry stuff is nonsense. Two Americans and an Englishman discussing centuries-old privilege and class,” agreed another. “Sounds like it’s high time for an Australian republic.”
Another impassioned user said it was time for Australia to grow up. “Time to become a republic and have an Australian as head of state as well as democratically elected!” he said.
“Bloody time to wake up!”
While some had branded the interview as a soap opera, others pointed out important topics like mental health and racism were raised in the interview.
“I’m seeing a lot of people tweeting a lot of words to say they don’t care about the royals so they’re not watching & ‘who gives a s**t about a rich couple’. I think everyone should care when a spotlight is shone on racism at ANY level,” wrote one woman.

UK-based historian and royal expert Kate Williams said the couple’s interview with Oprah showed stark similarities between Princess Diana and Meghan.
Harry also mentioned the similarities, saying one of his biggest fears if they’d remained senior royals was history repeating itself.
Aussies were also drawn in by the parallels and said Meghan was lucky to have Harry by her side.
“The parallels with Diana are so obvious, but it breaks my heart to know that while Meghan had Harry, Diana was well aware that her husband loved, and was having an affair with someone else,” one user shared.
