The trainer who helped Rebel Wilson lose 20kg has revealed one of his workout secrets.

Celebrity trainer Jono Castano, who is also an ambassador for Alternative Meat Co, started working with the Pitch Perfect actress just over a year ago.

His program for Wilson saw the Aussie star doing high-intensity interval training (HIIT) five days a week, one day of weights and resistance training and one day of rest.

Speaking to news.com.au, Castano said one of his secrets is keeping spirits high during a workout.

“I love a bit of banter,” he said. “It makes the session more enjoyable when people bounce off one another.

“You’ve got to enjoy coming to training. Most people don’t enjoy getting shouted at, that’s not what training is about

“Rebel and I had a good laugh, so many laughs.”

Wilson and Castano hit it off so well during their training sessions that they became good friends outside of the gym.

“I even went to her 40th birthday which was super special,” Castano told news.com.au.

The trainer and his wife, Amy, were among the 11 guests Wilson invited to her extravagant party at Disneyland’s 21 Royal dining experience which costs $1700 per head.

“It was simply amazing,” Castano said.

Wilson has dedicated 2020 to getting in shape, telling E! News: “This year, I really kind of psychically knew I wasn’t going to work that much and I was like this is going to be the year of health.”

And despite her focus on health, she still allows herself the odd treat or two.

“Remember though girls, you still gotta treat yourself,” she captioned a photo of her eating cake. “I just do it with food now only once or twice a week … and substitute bubble baths on alternate nights.”

It’s an approach that Castano endorses.

“I’m all about balance,” he told news.com.au. “When people hear the word ‘diet’ they get turned off and think they have to completely change their lifestyle. It’s not about that.

“It’s about enjoying your treats,” he said. “You can still go out for drinks with your mates, as long as you’re back on track the next day.

“You need to focus on a good balanced approach.”

As part of Castano’s “balanced approach”, he occasionally tries to have meat-free meals.

“When we think about plant-based diets, most people tend to think it’s either all or nothing,” he told news.com.au. “I think we need to change the way people think. I still eat meat but I love eating plant-based dishes as well.

“When you look at the Alternative Meat Co’s range they’ve got sausages, burger patties and they’ve also got crumbed chicken patties. So, for one meal you could have veggies on the side with Alternative Meat Co’s sausages, maybe add some avo.

“From a trainer’s point of view, that’s a perfect meal right there with carbs, protein, fibre and good fats,” he said.
