Rebel Wilson has candidly opened up about her lifestyle overhaul and subsequent weight loss.

Speaking to the Daily Mail while promoting her new dating app, Fluid, the Aussie actress and comedian said people don’t actually need as many calories to survive.

After attending the week-long Vivamayr medical spa retreat in Austria in recent years, the 43-year-old learned that consuming “600 calories [2510kJ] a day” was more than enough, as opposed to the “1,500 or 2,000 [6276 or 8368kJ]” that people think is needed.

However, she did clarify that 600 calories a day was for detox purposes and not the calorie count used for a daily routine.

“I was just actually in a program where I learned about food, and they taught us that you don’t really need as many calories as you think,” the Pitch Perfect star told the outlet at the event in Beverly Hills.

Wilson said that calorie count “might sound crazy to some people”, but if you eat right and eat small portions, “you’ll be just fine”.

“The problem is that people are stuck at a desk or in their car, and they tend to get hungry,” she said. “They want to eat because that’s how they deal with stress, or it’s a habit.”

Wilson said she too has bad habits when it comes to eating, admitting she is an emotional eater, with her cheat food being ice cream.

“I eat when my emotions run high,” she said. “I still struggle with that and I still work with that all the time – it’s just a process, it’s a journey.’

Wilson lost more than 30kg since 2020, when she overhauled her diet and lifestyle and embarked on a “Year of Health”.

She has continued to practice good eating habits. Still, since welcoming daughter Royce via surrogate in November 2022, Wilson said she had gained some weight as she isn’t working out as much due to parenting and work commitments.
