Rapper Nelly is ‘millions in debt’ — but fans have a plan to bail him out
NELLY is apparently millions of dollars in debt. But fans have created an ingenious movement to help out the impoverished rapper.
WHOA, Nelly.
The American rapper owes the IRS more than $US2.4 million ($3.1 million) in federal taxes for 2013, TMZ reports.
To make matters worse, the Grammy-winning musician has also been slapped with a $149,511 state tax lien by the Missouri Department of Revenue for the same year.
But he needn’t be alarmed. Fans wanting to help the Just A Dream hit maker have created the “#SaveNelly” movement.
Nelly allies are banding together to stream his song Hot In Herre enough times to clear his debt. But it’s harder said than done.
Spin reports the 2002 hit will have to be streamed at least 287,176,547 times on Spotify (more depending on what percentage the rap star gets in royalties) to make a decent dent in his bill.
If this doesn’t do the trick, TMZ reports the IRS could start seizing the St Louis native’s assets.

Nelly, real name Cornell Haynes Jr, made his Billboard 200 debut in 2000 with his album Country Grammar — his most successful effort to date, with 10 million copies sold.
The 41-year-old was arrested in Tennessee in April last year after police said they found handguns, meth, marijuana and drug paraphernalia on his tour bus.
