After contracting a severe ear, nose and throat infection while in Africa, Princess Charlene will not be able to return to Monaco in May for her 10th wedding anniversary.

The royal, 43, will instead have to undergo multiple procedures in her native South Africa as part of her treatment.

Charlene hasn’t been back to Monaco since January, however posted in June that her husband Prince Albert and their six-year-old twins Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques visited her in South Africa.

“This year will be the first time that I’m not with my husband on our anniversary in July, which is difficult, and it saddens me,” Princess Charlene said in a statement reported by the Daily Mail.

“However, Albert and I had no choice but to follow the medical team’s instructions even though it is extremely difficult. He has been the most incredible support to me.

“My daily conversations with Albert and my children help immensely to keep my spirits up, but I miss being with them. It was special to have my family visit me in South Africa, and it was truly wonderful seeing them. I can’t wait to be reunited with them.”

Princess Charlene first came to South Africa to do conservation and anti-poaching work earlier this year.

According to the Mail, her foundation says the royal was driving the cases close to her heart and pouring herself entirely into the projects when she fell ill.

Before she contracted the infection, she worked with various ambassadors and partners to raise awareness and funds for the Foundation’s initiatives.

While she cannot travel due to her health concerns, it is reported Prince Albert and their children will return to South Africa soon to support her.

Charlene was raised in South Africa, also representing the country in swimming at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

She had previously set up the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation South Africa to help save rhinos from poachers, but wanted to travel to the Thanda Safari in KwaZulu-Natal to learn more about what was being done.

It is unknown at this time what medical procedures she is undergoing.
