Patti LuPone says Madonna can't act

BROADWAY legend Patti LuPone has slammed Madonna, calling her a “movie killer” who “couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag”.

LuPone, who originated the role of Eva Peron in the Broadway musical Evita, was asked what she thought when she saw Madonna’s performance in the 1996 film.

“I was on the treadmill,” she told Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live. “I saw, I believe it was Buenos Aires — an early belt-note-heavy number Eva performs in the musical — and I thought it was a piece of s***.”

“Madonna is a movie killer,” said LuPone, 68. “She’s dead behind the eyes. She cannot act her way out of a paper bag. She should not be on — in film or onstage.”

LuPone, 68, won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Argentina’s former first lady, with Mandy Patinkin, also winning a Tony for his role as Che Guevara.

In fairness to Madonna’s acting she did win the Golden Globe in 1997 for Best Actress — Musical or Comedy, beating out great performances such as Frances McDormand in Fargo and Glenn Close in 101 Dalmations.

LuPone says the only time she has met Madonna was in 1988 when the singer was in Speed the Plow.

“I did meet her after her opening night party, and the only thing that Madonna has ever said to me was: “I’m taller than you.” Bada-bing,” she said.

In Evita, Eva Duarte rises from poverty to become an Argentinian actress and the wife of powerful President Juan Peron.

She is both admired and hated for her ambition and was aiming to be vice president before she died of cancer in 1952 aged 33.
