PRESIDENT Trump’s 11-year-old son Barron screamed with panic seeing a picture of a decapitated head he thought was his father, TMZ reports.

Mr Trump’s youngest child was reportedly watching television at home when he saw Kathy Griffin’s controversial stunt appear on screen.

“We’re told he panicked and screamed, ‘Mommy, Mommy!’” the agency reported.

“As it was put to us, ‘He’s 11. He doesn’t know who Kathy Griffin is and the head she was holding resembled his dad’.”

First Lady Melania Trump said she found the photo “very disturbing.”

“When you consider some of the atrocities happening in the world today, a photo opportunity like this is simply wrong and makes you wonder about the mental health of the person who did it,” she said.

President Trump lashed out at Kathy Griffin’s stunt on Wednesday, saying his children are “having a hard time” with it.

The President said the controversial star “should be ashamed” for her tasteless display in which she was seen holding a picture of Trump’s head.

He said his 11-year-old son, Barron, was particularly upset over the “sick” image that sparked an instant backlash online.

It came after he broke his silence on the “covfefe” mystery that went viral on Wednesday and again accused Democrats of a “witch hunt” against his top aides over links to Russia.

Earlier, Kathy Griffin hastily apologised for a shocking photo shoot in which she was seen wielding President Donald Trump’s bloodied, decapitated head.

The veteran comic has long been an outspoken Trump critic, but the gruesome nature of her latest anti-Trump display that shocked fellow celebs and even Hillary and Bill Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea.

The instant backlash to the shockingly realistic photos made Griffin pull all evidence of the bloody stunt from the internet, issuing a video apology in its place.

“I sincerely apologise. I am just now seeing the reaction of these images. The image is too disturbing, I understand how it offends people. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in career. I will continue. Taking down the image, gonna ask the photographer to take down the image. I beg for your forgivness. I went too far, I made a mistake and I was wrong,” she said.

Griffin had earlier posted behind the scenes footage from the shoot with photographer Tyler Shields on her Twitter account, writing: “I caption this ‘there was blood coming out of his eyes, blood coming out of his ... wherever.”

The caption is a reference to comments Trump made about journalist Megyn Kelly in 2015 after a fiery debate exchange.

The video was met with an instant backlash from both sides of the political divide.

Even the US Secret Service sent out an appropriately-veiled tweet in the wake of the photo shoot appearing online:

In another since-deleted tweet, Griffin clarified that “OBVIOUSLY, I do not condone ANY violence by my fans or others to anyone, ever! I’m merely mocking the Mocker in Chief.”

In an interview with EW, photographer Shields said he’d anticipated a backlash but defended the work.

“I think there will be a lot of people who will absolutely hate this, but again, that’s the beauty of it,” he said.

“Am I saying that anyone should actually be killed? No, it’s like a movie. How many movies are there where the president gets killed or this happens? Tons upon tons. But again, when it’s an image, especially an image like this, people don’t see it like that. They see it as reality, and that’s why it’s so shocking to some people.”

In the wake of the controversy, the toilet accessory stool company Squatty Potty felt moved to issue a press release, clarifying their professional relationship with the comedian:
