Neighbours stars rally around Kate Keltie as she battles breast cancer

Former Neighbours star Kate Keltie, who was revealed to be diagnosed with stage four breast cancer last November, has made a miraculous recovery from the terminal illness.

Fans and former Neighbours colleagues flocked to support Keltie, 37, when news of her condition was made public late last year.

A GoFundMe page was set up for Keltie by her cousin, Ebony Gilbert, with a goal to raising $25,000.

Gilbert wrote on the fundraising page, “[Keltie’s] cancer is extremely aggressive and it has spread to other parts of her body, including her lymph nodes, blood and hip bones (known as metastatic cancer).

“This week, the fight of her life begins as she starts chemotherapy. Given the severity of the chemotherapy that Kate requires, her oncologist advised that working and maintaining her job during this time is not an option.”

The GoFundMe eventually raised more than $37,000 for Keltie’s treatment. Those who contributed included Keltie’s former Neighbours co-star Holly Candy (nee Valance), who gave $2000.

The Daily Mail reports that in February, a remarkable update was posted to the GoFundMe, with Keltie telling her supporters she was now “cancer-free.”

“I recently received results of my latest scan and was told that there had been a complete metabolic response to diseased areas,” she added.

“In other words, it seems I am cancer-free.”

Keltie’s uncle Michael Keltie confirmed the remarkable news to the outlet, telling the Daily Mail: “When she went back with her mother and father, the doctor said, ‘It’s gone – it’s completely gone.’

“They didn’t know what they were hearing when they were told. They said, “What do you mean, it’s gone? He said, “It’s completely gone.”

“So that is a really positive story what happened with Kate.”

Shortly after the positive update was posted in February, the GoFundMe account was shut down, with the full fundraising sum of $37,362 passed over to Keltie. The Daily Mail reports Keltie has since turned down several requests for an interview to discuss her incredible recovery.

News.com.au has contacted Keltie for comment.

Keltie was best known for her work on Neighbours, on which she appeared in 387 episodes. As a child actor, she made her debut in More Than Words and then Halifax f.p., before going on to star in 50 episodes of Thunderstone.

She was also on five episodes of Blue Heelers, but played three different characters, and was last seen onscreen in an episode of Rush in 2008.

Kate’s now-deleted cancer update:

“I want to share some incredible news. I recently received results of my latest scan and was told that there had been a complete metabolic response to diseased areas … In other words, it seems I am cancer-free.

The last six months have been the most challenging time I have ever experienced to say the least. The diagnosis completely turned my world upside down and it’s something I hope to never go through again.

I couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you. Your support played a huge part in my navigating this horrible time. It will forever be something I remember and am truly grateful for. I also want to thank the amazing team at Peter Mac in Melbourne, and my beautiful family and friends. You are incredible.

The nature of my cancer having travelled through the blood stream, means that I will receive monthly infusions indefinitely, with no side effects. Surgery is also off the table at this point. Life begins again.

I will continue to be a proud ambassador for the Mother's Day Classic. And I am very much looking forward to raising funds at my benefit for the National Breast Cancer Foundation on March 31.

Tickets are available through EventBrite if you are local and would like to be a part of the evening. (little plug there ;)) I will continue to support the community however I can moving forward, because I know how it feels to get the help you need, when you need it the most.”
