Moment Eva Mendes, Ryan Gosling find huntsman spider in Aussie bedroom

A huntsman spider has given Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes a warm welcome to Australia by showing up on their bed.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes got the true Australian experience last week when a huntsman greeted them in their Bondi bedroom.

The Hollywood stars made the move to Australia two months ago with their two young daughters, Amada, 6, and Esmeralda, 8, for Gosling to star in his latest film The Fall Guy, which is being shot in NSW.

Speaking to news.com.au Eva Mendes said the wildlife - if that included huntsman spiders - had been the biggest culture shock so far.

They found one on their bed one night last week, freaking the whole family out.

“This thing was huge. It was crazy,” she said. “I just started screaming like a psycho.”

Mendes said even Gosling, who she described as having a calm energy, was startled.

“I don't usually speak for him but I can say he was definitely shocked by its size and ability to move so quickly,” she laughed.

“I just got out of the room. I can’t say I was a witness to what happened.

“It was really something. Of course you know you always want to act cool in front of your kids, like I don’t want to pass down the (fear) but I couldn’t be cool.”

Mendes said she had enjoyed flying under the radar while down under.

“Australians are so cool, and just so warm and we feel so welcomed,” she said.

“People really understand that we’re just a regular family at a park. I’m going through the same stuff another mum is going through, you know, lugging around a snack bag and my kids don’t want to leave the park and there’s crying – it’s a whole thing.

“I got to say I do miss my mum a lot, my mum’s back home and she’s not feeling well these days. I miss her but being here in this beautiful city with beautiful people that are so warm, it makes it worthwhile.”

Mendes also said they were missing their dog Lucho, a Doberman, but she loved how dog-friendly Bondi was and it made her happy to see them everywhere.

On Friday Mendes was at the Ronald McDonald House at Westmead and on Saturday she visited McDonald’s at Haberfield in Sydney’s inner west as an ambassador for McHappy Day.

McHappy Day is the largest annual fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities, which help seriously ill and injured children and their families stay together while receiving medical care in a nearby hospital.
