Mariah Carey reveals her mum and sister have died on the same day

Mariah Carey has broken her silence two weeks after the tragic deaths of her mother and sister.

The singer, who lost mum Patricia and sister Alison on the same day last month, returned to social media over the weekend to thank her fans for their support following the unimaginable double family tragedy.

“It’s been a couple of rough weeks, but I appreciate everyone’s love and support so much,” she captioned a video shared on Instagram, adding that she was “back at work” ahead of her upcoming shows in China and Brazil.

“I can’t wait to see my fans in China & Brazil. Love you!”

In the clip, the singer, 55, performed a stripped-down rendition of her upbeat 2005 track It’s Like That before telling fans, “We’ll see you soon.”

The post marks Mariah’s return to Instagram after suffering the loss of her loved ones, who died within hours of one another on August 27.

It was Mariah who announced their deaths in a statement via People magazine.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the Grammy-winning singer wrote in her statement.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Mariah was estranged from her sister and her mother for many years before their deaths, even detailing her relationship with her mother in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities,” she wrote in her book. “It’s never been only black-and-white – it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.”

Patricia – a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach – was married to Mariah’s father, Alfred Roy Carey, before they divorced when she was just aged three. Alfred died in 2002, aged 72; Patricia was 87 when she passed.

However, Mariah and Patricia remained in contact and in 2010, mother and daughter performed together for Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special on US network ABC, singing a duet mash-up of O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus.

Mariah would go on to dedicate her memoir to her mother, writing: “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

Unfortunately, Mariah and Alison remained at odds right up until her death, reportedly from complications with an organ function while she was in hospice care. Alison was 63.

In the wake of her passing, Alison’s close friend, David Baker, claimed that Mariah “never tried to contact” her older sister during their estrangement, not even to check on Alison when she was put in hospice care weeks before her death.

“A phone call or, better still, a video call would have meant so much to Alison. But it never came,” Baker told The US Sun. “The callous rejection added more hurt to Alison’s pain.”
